COODY FAMILY GENEALOGY JOHN SELLERS COODY ( 21 Feb 1871 - 6 Dec 1959 ) (Written by Waymon Odell Coody as told by Ottis Odell Coody) ntbl John Sellers Coody was born 21 February 1871 in Imperial Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. He was the third child born to Marquis De Lafayette and Martha Jane Garlington Coody.
John Sellers Coody moved with his family to Grant Parish, Louisiana, at an early age. He received a very limited education in Grant Parish, but had a very good penmanship of "Old English Script".
John Sellers Coody married Ellen Irene Young on 21 December 1893, in Grant Parish, Louisiana. Ellen Irene Young was the fifth child of Matthew David Young and Jerusha E. Brazille Young. John Sellers Coody's father, Marquis De Lafayette Coody was a Methodist Minister and Ellen Irene Young's father, Matthew David Young was Baptist Minister.
The following children were born to John and Ellen Coody: Matthew De Lafayette, Emily Viola, "Baby Boy" Coody, William Benjamin, Ira Lee, Delores Roberta, Harold Elsy, Ottis Odell, Verla Inez, Roy Lemar, Arby Wade, "Baby Girl" Coody (twin), "Baby Girl" Coody (twin), "Baby Boy" Coody.
24 September 1919, John Sellers and his two young sons, Harold Elsy and Ottis Odell, left Grant Parish, Louisiana, by wagon and mule named Dan and a mare named Dolly, Dolly had a young mule colt named Jake that ran along side his mother. (Jake was four years to the day younger that Arby Wade, and the mule lived to be thirty five years of age.) The trip took six days from Grant Parish to West Carroll Parish, Louisiana. They came by way of Harrisonburg, Louisiana, because of a quarantine of anthrax in Quachita Parish, Louisiana. They arrived in Epps, Louisiana, and spent the night with a family friend, John Fallen, west of Epps. The next day, October 1st, John Sellers hitched to the wagon and mules and went 15 miles to Delhi, Louisiana, to meet the train that was bringing his wife and three of the youngest children who were still at home, being Verla, Arby and Roy.
John Fallin was a Real Estate Agent for D.M. Brier. John Sellers and his wife and young children moved into an old run-down house at Wilcosin, Louisiana, (Gowan's spur) with 40 acres of land. John Sellers and his wife built a small house and cleared 18 acres of land. He and his family made two crops. He could not pay for the land so he turned it back to the Real Estate Agent after one year and rented the second year. He only made 2 or 3 bales of cotton each of the two years.
The winter of the second year (1921), John Sellers moved his family to the Poole Place 1-1/2 miles east of Epps, Louisiana. He made one crop on this place and made 7 bales of cotton.
In 1923 and 1924, John Sellers moved his family to a farm east of Epps, now known as Poverty State Park. In 1923 the crops were poor, but 1924, John and his family made 21 bales of cotton on 20 acres of land. Also, they made a very good crop of corn on 10 acres. The fall of 1924, John Sellers bought 40 acres of land in Campbell Community, 3 miles east of Pioneer, Louisiana. This land was covered with virgin hardwood timber with no place to live. He rented the Iley Campbell house and rented the land for two years, until he and his sons could clear the land and build a house. Iley Campbell was living at Delta Saw mill and was woods boss for the mill. After John and his family completed their house and moved in, Iley and Minnie Campbell moved back into their house. After one year Iley and Minnie Campbell moved to Angola, Louisiana where Iley became a guard at the State Prison. In 1947, John Sellers and Ellen Irene Coody sold their home to their son, Roy Lemar, who had just returned from W.W.II. Roy lived on the home place until his retirement in 1973. He built a new brick home and rented the land to his daughter and her husband. Later he sold to her and her husband and they built a very large story and a half home with built-in heated swimming pool. Roy's daughter, Reba Gale Coody Crow, later died and the property is with the Crow family.
