bullet  General Notes:

As a child I visited "Grannie Berryhill" every summer. Carrie and I would ride the train from Hazlehurst to Cochran. Mama would put us on the train and Carrie Berryhill (Aunt Carrie) would be there to get us off. The trip took 2 hours to travel 65 miles. The train stopped at every town; Lumber City, McRae, Helena, Towns, Dubois, Eastman, Chauncy, and Empire to name a few. When we first started riding the engines were the old coal type, I think; most of the time it was the new desiel(?) we called them the streamlined trains. We road on the Southern Railways. I don't know how old we were when we began riding alone but probably 6 and 4 maybe 8 and 6. Grannie died when I was 8 so maybe she wasn't alive when we went alone. I do remember going the year she died. Mama, Reuben, Carrie and myself road the bus. It was Christmas time and Mama took all our Christmas gifts in a large box. She left Sam with Papa in Hazlehurst and left his gifts there. Sam and Papa came for Grannie's funeral. I don't remember too much about Grannie except she was old and wore long dresses and her hair in a bun. There was a wood stove for cooking in the kitchen, a smoke house outside, lots of fig, apple, and plum trees, and lots of flowers.

I have been told by close family members that know her, that Corinne has a professional researcher from Atlanta do the research. Some people have stated that they do not put faith in this book because of some errors. I have yet to find anything 100%. You will have to judge for yourself. Until they prove otherwise and cite the correction, I believe what I have cited is correct.
