The Lemke Album
Click photo to see a larger image.

Our Lemkes are believed to be from Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad, Russia), and may have moved to the Hamburg area, possibly Altona-Bahrenfeld.  Carl Anton E. Lemke (born in Tilsit) and his brother Walter Adelbert were bakers and possibly started in Baltimore or Boston, later opening bakeries along the West Coast from Alaska (Walter), Bremerton, WA, Yreka, Calistoga, Berkeley, CA and Southern California.

Carl married Meta Elsie Jones of Iowa about 1907.  Her family lived in the Redding, Shasta, CA area starting 1893, and Hampton and Smith cousins may still be there. (We would like to have a photograph of her.) Her maternal relatives lived in Jackson Township (Ollie), Keokuk County, Iowa at least from 1860-1910. Her father's family, from New York, came to Clay Township, Washington County, Iowa before 1860.
