TAFT PENSIONERS

This page includes Taft Pension records extracted from the National Archives microfilmed index cards.  If an individual is listed, a pension file is available from the National  Archives.  Information about requesting copies of the files can be obtained from the National Archives through their web site at www.nara.gov.

Keep in mind, this listing only includes Taft's who received pensions and does not represent all Taft individuals who served in the U.S. Military during these wars or periods in history.

The description of the microfilm source is from the National Archives on-line catalog and includes additional information about the index and records themselves.

War of 1812 Pension Index

Source:

Index to War of 1812 Pension Application Files. Microfilm Publication M313, Roll 99, National Archives: Washington, DC.

Description:

This microfilm publication reproduces the faces of the envelopes containing War of 1812 pension applications arranged alphabetically by name of veteran. The files in this War of 1812 series relate to claims based on service rendered between 1812 and 1815. All pensions granted to veterans of the War of 1812 and their surviving dependents before 1871 were based exclusively on service-connected disability or death.

The amount of information shown on the envelopes varies considerably. Each shows the name of a veteran, the name of his widow if she applied, the pension claim or file number or numbers, and some indication either of the type of service or of the organization in which the veteran served. Many of the envelopes also give certain personal identifying data about the veteran and/or his widow. Information in the upper right-hand corner of some of the envelopes relates to applications for bounty land. A file, however, may contain bounty land applications even though there is no such indication on the face of the envelope.

Civil War (Union) and Misc. Pension Index

Source:

General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934. Microfilm Publication T288, Roll 462, National Archives: Washington, DC.

Description:

This microfilm publication reproduces a general index to pension files, 1861-1934. The pension applications to which this index applies relate chiefly to Army, Navy, and Marine Corps service performed between 1861 and 1916. Most of the records relate to Civil War service; some relate to earlier service by Civil War veterans; others relate to service in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion, and the Regular Establishment. There are no records of service in Confederate forces. Confederate pensions were granted by Southern states after the war, and the files are state, not federal, records. For more information, contact the Museum of the Confederacy, 1201 East Clay Street, Richmond, VA 23219.

Each card in the general index gives a veteran's name, rank, unit, and term of service; names of dependent(s); the filing date; the application number; the certificate number; and the state from which the claim was filed. The darker cards relate to naval service.
