PERRYMAN, William
A family member said the story she remembers is that when William and the
According to family, he took supplies to his son during the Civil, got sick and died at or near Little Rock, Arkansas.
• Research: 1 Interesting to note was the residence of William at the time of the Tippah County land purchase. He lived in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. 1840 Census records show, Andrew Gilbreath, father of William's wife, Elizabeth, lived in Tishomingo County and these two counties shared a common border. It seemed that William Perryman was moving west with the Gilbreaths. If so, this would explain why other Perryman relatives were not located near William during these early years. • 1840 he appeared as William Perryman, HOH, age 20-30, employed in Agriculture on the census in Tippah County, Mississippi. 2 1 male-under 5 (James would have been 4 • 1841 William Perryman appeared on the State census for Tippah County, Mississippi • 9 Jul 1842, Land Records Tippah County, Mississippi: William Periman 4 Deed from Alexander Rhodes for quarter section (160 acres) • 1845 William Perryman appeared on the State Census in Tippah County, Mississippi • 8 Sep 1848, Land Records Smith County, Texas: State of Texas, Grantor to William Perryman, 124 & 4/100 acres of land about 15 miles NE from Tyler, virture of bounty Warrant on the 17th day of August 1848 5 • 25 Oct 1848, Land Records Tippah County, Mississippi: Wm Perryman and Elizabeth Perryman Deed to John Grisham This is the same land he bought in 1842 • 6 Jul 1850, Land Records Smith County, Texas, USA: P. Two of his sons, Alexander and William, were old enough to have been William's (b. 1811) father. However, Alexander did not have a son born in 1811 and William had a son named William, born about 1826, thus ruling both of them out as potential fathers to William (b. 1811). Various family researchers also list the elder William with a son, James, born about 1783 in North Carolina. In 1800, James lived in Burke County, North Carolina, as did his probable father, William. In 1809, a James Perryman was listed in court records of Adair County, Kentucky, and could very well have been the same James from Burke County. The possibility existed that this James could have been William's (b.1811) • 1852, County Records: County Commissioners Court Minutes, Smith County, Texas, USA. list William Perryman, with 4 other men as appointed to review the road from Bellzora to connect with the New River Road. Land records show William owning land bordering the waters of the Sabine River.) • 1852, County Records: Fall Term District Court Minutes, Smith County, Texas, USA. list one of the persons drawn for Jury Duty on August 23, 1852 as Wm Perryman, and on October 25, 1852, Wm. Perryman is listed as a Grand Juror. • 17 Feb 1852, Land Records Smith County, Texas: William Perryman, Grantee and Grantor, Jno W. Lawrence 8 No. 877 Transcribed as best I can "Geo W. Perryman, deceased: • 11 Mar 1857, Land Records Smith County, Texas: Wm. Perryman sells 122 40/100 acres of land about 15 miles north of Tyler, Texas on the waters of the Sabine River to Ellis Aday. William married Elizabeth GILBREATH, daughter of Andrew GILBREATH and Mary "Polly" RICHARDS, about 1835. (Elizabeth GILBREATH was born between 1814 and 1816 in Kentucky, died before 1872 in probably Smith County, Texas and was buried in probably Perryman Cemetery, on property own by Perryman family.)
In 1830, Andrew Gilbreath, father of Elizabeth Gilbreath, lived in Henderson County,Tennessee. By 1840, he lived in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Knowing that William and Elizabeth's son, James, was born in Tennessee, it seemed likely that William and Elizabeth were married in Henderson County about 1835." A marriage record has never been located probably due to the fact that Henderson County's courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1863 during the Civil War and consequently, most civil and land records were destroyed. By 1840, William and Elizabeth lived in Tippah County, Mississippi, a county bordering Tishomingo. It seemed that William Perryman followed the Gilbreaths and not the Perrymans as he made his way west." research by Dianne 2010. |
