PERRYMAN, William

  • Born: Abt 1811, Kentucky
  • Marriage: GILBREATH, Elizabeth about 1835
  • Died: Between 14 Jun 1862 and 15 Oct 1870

bullet  General Notes:

A family member said the story she remembers is that when William and the
family came to Texas, they settled in the Hopewell Community, near Lindale, Smith County, Texas.
The 1850 Smith County, Texas census shows Jenetta, age 3, born in Miss, which would have been about 1847. The Republic of Texas Poll List for 1846 didn't show William or James Perryman in Smith County, so apparently they came to Smith County after 1847.

bullet  Medical Notes:

According to family, he took supplies to his son during the Civil, got sick and died at or near Little Rock, Arkansas.

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• Research: 1 Interesting to note was the residence of William at the time of the Tippah County land purchase. He lived in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. 1840 Census records show, Andrew Gilbreath, father of William's wife, Elizabeth, lived in Tishomingo County and these two counties shared a common border. It seemed that William Perryman was moving west with the Gilbreaths. If so, this would explain why other Perryman relatives were not located near William during these early years.

William married Elizabeth Gilbreath about 1835, based on the ages of their children. As will be seen further by further research, in 1830, Elizabeth's father, Andrew Gilbreath, lived in Henderson County, Tennessee. Knowing that William and Elizabeth's son, James, was born in 1836 in Tennessee, it seemed that William and Elizabeth's marriage could have taken place in Henderson County, followed by the birth of their son, James. Unfortunately, the Henderson County Courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1863 during the Civil War and consequently, most civil and land records were lost.
This may explain the reason why a marriage record has never been located for William and Elizabeth. Additionally, Henderson County land records could not be located for the Perrymans or Gilbreaths for the same reason.

• 1840 he appeared as William Perryman, HOH, age 20-30, employed in Agriculture on the census in Tippah County, Mississippi. 2 1 male-under 5 (James would have been 4
1 male 20-29 (William would have been abt 29)

1 female, assume this is Elizabeth 20-30

• Lineage: 1 "The William Perryman (b.1759) who died in Russell County, Kentucky, settled in Adair County, Kentucky sometime between 1800 and 1810. Two of his sons, Alexander and William, were old enough to have been William's (b. 1811) father. However, Alexander did not have a son born in 1811 and William had a son named William, born about 1826, thus ruling both of them out as potential fathers to William (b. 1811). Various family researchers also list the elder William with a son, James, born about 1783 in North Carolina. In 1800, James lived in Burke County, North Carolina, as did his probable father, William. In 1809, a James Perryman was listed in court records of Adair County, Kentucky, and could very well have been the same James from Burke County. The possibility existed that this James could have been William's (b.1811)
father. No other records were located for James during this phase of research and
additional research would need to be conducted in order to determine the family
connection, if any existed."

William married Elizabeth GILBREATH, daughter of Andrew GILBREATH and Mary "Polly" RICHARDS, about 1835. (Elizabeth GILBREATH was born between 1814 and 1816 in Kentucky, died before 1872 in probably Smith County, Texas and was buried in probably Perryman Cemetery, on property own by Perryman family.)

bullet  Marriage Notes:

In 1830, Andrew Gilbreath, father of Elizabeth Gilbreath, lived in Henderson County,Tennessee. By 1840, he lived in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Knowing that William and Elizabeth's son, James, was born in Tennessee, it seemed likely that William and Elizabeth were married in Henderson County about 1835." A marriage record has never been located probably due to the fact that Henderson County's courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1863 during the Civil War and consequently, most civil and land records were destroyed. By 1840, William and Elizabeth lived in Tippah County, Mississippi, a county bordering Tishomingo. It seemed that William Perryman followed the Gilbreaths and not the Perrymans as he made his way west." research by Dianne 2010.
