2011 his great granddaughter remembers "Cataracts caused him to go blind. We played jokes on him all the time. He had to be a special person to put up with us and never get mad at us. I remember when Papa and Maw-Maw lived across the road from Aunt Myrtle's, the road was heavy sand and we spent a lot of time playing in the sand and walking down the road, Deloris would yell out" Grandpa look out there's a snake." He'd jump and act like he really thought there was a snake. I remember thinking that was mean to do, but then I realized it was a game to him, and when everyone laughed he'd scold us, but in a way that we knew he was teasing."
