bullet  Noted events in his life were:

  • Lineage rationale: 1 Michael Cline names John as his son in his will of December 1, 1784. John Cline, orphan of Michael Cline, being of full age chooses Francis Lock as his guardian in January 1791 in Cabarrus county. There is this only one adult John Cline in the Cabarrus county and Rowan county area records during the period 1787-1809 and there is no John Cline in these records again until 1830.
  • Birth date: 1 John is probably born 1770-1774. His birth date is derived from the court
record noting that he is "of full age" in January 1791, when he chooses a
guardian. This is taken to mean that John is at least 16 but no more than 20
years old. Further attesting to John's being born by 1774 is his attendance at
Francis Seals' estate sale in 1792.
  • Family history: 1 John marries Rachel Shaver on November 5, 1798 in Cabarrus Co.
In April 1799, John registers his cattle mark in court. John holds land in Cabarrus county until October 21, 1799, when he deeds to his brothers George and Daniel his share of the land they inherited from their father. John then
appears to move to Rowan county.
On March 6, 1805, John Cline witnesses a deed for 100 acres on the south
side of the Yadkin River in Rowan county and proves it in the Salisbury
court in November 1805. On September 25, 1809, John Cline and Philip
Swicegood witness a deed from Philip Harmon to David Harmon on Swan
Creek in northern Rowan county. This John Cline is presumed to be John
Cline (1.8.14) from Cabarrus county, since there is no other known John
Cline in the Rowan and Cabarrus county area at this time.
On April 20, l802, John Cline sues the administrator for John Smith in the
Cabarrus county court. John probably travels back to Cabarrus county from
Rowan county to bring this suit.

John Cline (1.8.14) of Cabarrus county is not found in any North Carolina
records after 1809. A search for John Cline, of the appropriate age to be
Michael's son, in the adjacent states of South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and
Tennessee turns up no match in the census records of 1800-1850.
It is speculated that John Cline (1.8.14) dies soon after arriving in Tennessee
and therefore does not appear there in either the civil records or the census.
There is some evidence that his descendants are in Knox county, Tennessee.
There is a younger John Cline, born in 1790-1800, in the Knox county,
Tennessee 1830 census who might be a son of John Cline (1.8.14) of
Cabarrus county. He is a possible son of John Cline because he names his
sons Archibald and George, which are unusual given names among Clines.
John's possible father, John Cline (1.8.14), has a brother George who has a
son George and a grandson Archibald. This younger John Cline marries in
1813 in Knox county, Tennessee and dies there in 1847. Two possible
daughters of John Cline (1.8.14) marry in Knox county in 1818 and 1828.
These facts lead to a very speculative conclusion that John Cline (1.8.14)
comes to Knox county, Tennessee about 1810 and dies before 1820, since he
is not in the Tennessee 1820 or 1830 census. Further, his son John marries
there in 1813, is in the 1830-1840 census and dies in 1847, leaving the family
shown in the Knox county 1850 census. It is noted that this possible son
John would probably have to be born somewhat prior to his father's marriage
to Rachel Shaver in 1798, assuming John and his father's marriage dates
have been properly transcribed from the original records.
  • Discrepencies: 2 On March 6, 1805, John Cline witnesses a deed for 100 acres on the south
side of the Yadkin River in Rowan county and proves it in the Salisbury
    court in November 1805
. On September 25, 1809, John Cline and Philip
Swicegood witness a deed from Philip Harmon to David Harmon on Swan
    Creek in northern Rowan county
. This John Cline is presumed to be John Cline (1.8.14) from Cabarrus county, since there is no other known John Cline in the Rowan and Cabarrus county area at this time.
On April 20, l802, John Cline sues the administrator for John Smith in the
Cabarrus county court. John probably travels back to Cabarrus county from
Rowan county to bring this suit.
FH1 states that John Cline of Cabarrus county moves to Sumner county,
Tennessee, where his wife's parents have moved. However, the John Cline
in Sumner county, Tennessee described in FH1 is actually from Lincoln
county and is a son of Martin Cline as documented in the Martin Cline (4.1.2) portion of Chapter 2 in this book. The John Cline in Sumner county,
Tennessee is born in 1785 and his wife is Catherine
. He clearly is not the John Cline (1.8.14) of Cabarrus county, who is born 1770-1774 and has a wife Rachel Shaver.
