CLINE, George Washington

  General Notes:

Family says that the George W. stands for George Washington, but the only records I've found list his name as G.W., George or George W.

There are several G. W., George or George W. Clines listed on the 1850 census, but I haven't been able to find one that corresponds with the correct age and family. George W.'s father and mother are listed in Murray county, Georgia, page 185, they are living with their son David A. Cline and his family, (This David A. Cline, brother to G. W. is also known to his family as "Antny"). George B. Cline, author of "The Cline Families of North Carolina: 1750-1860" believes our George W. Cline is listed as Dactor Cline, age 21 on the 1850 census for Murray county, Georgia, p. 256, (which could correspond to his age on 1860 census) this Dactor Cline is living in the household of his brother Leonard Cline. (Our G.W. has a brother named Leonard). (Possibly Dactor Cline, should have been written Doctor Cline, many of the Cline family that we have personally known, had nicknames, one of which was a grandson of George & Narcissa Cline's, named Guy Lester, but all the family called him "Doc". He was not a doctor, and I do not know how he got the nickname, but possibly it was given to him by his father, David Anthony "Antny", the 2nd son of George W. and Narcissa Cline.

Three census track George & Narcissa's married life, his ages vary some, but each of these census contain his wife and children. Sadly the 1890 census burned and records for that year are few, as of yet, I'll not found any of this family for that census year. There is still some question as to the Benjamin Cline with this family on the 1880 census, apparently he died at a young age.

We do not know what year they came to Central Texas or on to East Texas, but with the following facts, we can get a better idea of the time frame. Molly, their daughter is living with her parents on the 1880 Georgia census, and she married in Georgia in 1882. By 1900, she and her family are found on the census in Smith county, Texas. In July of 1889, George and Narcissa's son, Robert married in Bosque County, Texas. With this information, I'm assuming they came to Texas between 1882 and 1889. I have a copy of an application for a Civil War Headstone made by "Spake", George and Narcissa's son, stating his death as 18 Apr 1894 and that he is buried in Steiner Valley, Hill county, Texas. Also, U. Claud Cline, son of David A. and grandson of George and Narcissa is buried in the Steiner Valley cemetery, tombstone shows date of death as 1888. Of course, it's possible that the individual families moved at different times, but knowing George and Narcissa, along with their other children were living with their son David A. in 1880, leads me to believe they likely came to Texas together. History of the family that has been pasted down is that: "After the war, the Clines, Newtons, Daniels, Burtons along with other families moved to Hill County, Texas area. Here they settled and farmed in the Steiner Valley near Whitney, Texas. "

In 1895, the government took over the Steiner Valley and used it as a Prison farm, so the families scattered. George, having died in 1894, was buried in Steiner Valley. (Our cousin Ernest Cline said he saw the Civil War marker on George's grave, but no one inquired as to what cemetery, and to date after searching many cemeteries in the area, we have been unable to find his grave).

• 11 Nov 1850 he appeared as Doctor Cline, age 21, farmer, born in North Carolina (some believe this is George W. Cline) on the census in , Murray County, Georgia, USA. ¹ His parents, David A. and Mary Cline are living in the household of their son and George W.'s brother and sister-in-law, David A. & Eda E. Cline, who are also living in Murray County, Georgia. The census enumarator was the same, Absalom Holcombe and was dated 18 Sep 1850.

• 20 Jul 1860 he appeared as G. W. Cline, age 32, HOH, born abt 1828 in North Carolina, Value of Real Estate $100 and Value of Personal Property $75 on the census in Webster, Jackson, North Carolina, USA. ²

• Abt 1861-1863, Military: George W. Cline, Civil War. ³ According to records that were published by the North Carolina Division of Archives and History: "16th NC Infantry Company A April 1861-October 1862", George W. Cline, age 38 is listed with the Noncommissioned Officers and Privates as serving with the Thomas Legion Regiment and disignated Company A of that Unit. Later the company was transferred to the 39th Regiment, NC Troops, and designated Company K. Records show that two companies mixed together as one regiment, Thomas' Legion and Walker's Battalion. "Record of Events for William Holland Thomas' Legion, Walker's Battalion, Levi's Battery Light Artillery, North Carolina Troops, April 1862-1864" states these volunteers were mustered in for local defense of the Carolinas, East Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia, and the Cumberland Mountains in Kentucky.

• 10 Jun 1880 he appeared as George Cline, father, age 60, born abt 1820 in Georgia. His son, David A. Cline is listed as HOH. on the census in Cassville, Bartow, Georgia, USA. ⁵

George married Narcissa NEWTON, daughter of Solomon NEWTON and Kizziah FARLEY, on 4 Feb 1852 in , Haywood County, North Carolina, USA. (Narcissa NEWTON was born about 1836 in , Macon County, North Carolina, USA and died in 1900 in Farmersville, Collin County, Texas USA ⁶.) The cause of her death was Flu.
