58.  James WHITT (941); born 1792 in Montgomery Co., VA;[1],[2] married Susannah Ally (957), daughter of Carey Alley (4264) and Mary Short (4263), May 16, 1817 in Montgomery Co., VA;[3] married Lucy Pelham (4583) March 31, 1878 in Pulaski Co., VA;[4] died after March 31, 1878 probably in Pulaski Co., VA.[5]

     He lived in 1830 in Montgomery Co., VA[6] and is listed as a farmer in 1850 and 1878 in Pulaski Co., VA.[7],[8]

 

     Susannah ALLY (957)[9],[10] was born in 1797 in VA.[11],[12]

     Children of James Whitt (941) and Susannah Ally (957) were as follows:

         89.        i.    Amanda (958); born 1829.[13]

+       90.        ii.    Burgess (961), born 1830 in VA; married Mary Bridgewater (4270).

         91.      iii.    Abijah (964); born April 10, 1832 in Montgomery Co., VA;[14],[15] married Eliza Harler (4258), daughter of William Haler (4259) and Elizabeth Webb (4260), August 30, 1864 in Montgomery Co., VA.[16]

     He began military service on March 1, 1862 at Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA.  A Civil War veteran, Abijah enlisted in Co. E of the 24th VA INF as a private.  His service record follows.

     ABIJAH WHITT

     Enlisted in Co. E on 3/1/1862 at Newberry (Newbern).

     He was sent to the hospital on 10/27/62 and admitted to the Richmond Hospital on 10/31/62 but never returned.

     Whitt, Abijah; Co. E.  Private/Private.  Bounty pay of $50.

Company Muster Rolls

     June 30 to Oct. 31, 1862-(enlisted Mar. 1, 1862 at Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA) Absent-sent to hospital on Oct. 27, 1862.  Register of Receiving Hospital (#9) in Richmond, VA shows  Abijah was admitted on Oct. 31, 1862 and later transferred to General Hospital #19.  A Hospital Muster Roll here showed different enlistment data.

     Nov. to Feb., 1863-Absent

     Mar., 1863 to Oct. 1864-Absent without Leave

     July 23: For arresting and delivering to the Provost Marshal

          1863     at Dublin Depot, VA (as per annexed receipts)         

          Two Deserters at $30 each-

          Viz.  Charles Taylor, Co. E, 24th Virginia Regt.

                & Abijah Whitt, Co. E, 24th Virginia Regt.       $60.[17],[18]

He ended military service sometime after July 23, 1863 when he was returned as a deserter (the next muster showed Abijah as AWOL again).[19]

He was a cooper after 1864 in Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA.[20]

         92.       iv.    Sarah K. (959); born 1833.[21],[22]

     She lived in 1860 in Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA with her father, James Whitt.[23]

         93.       v.    Archibald (960); born 1834 in Montgomery Co., VA;[24],[25] married by minister R. V. Godbey to Polly Davis (4584) on April 8, 1858 in Pulaski Co., VA.[26]

     He was a laborer living with his father, James Whitt in 1850 in Pulaski Co., VA.[27] Archibald was a mechanic in 1858 in Pulaski Co., VA.[28]

     He began military service on December 2, 1862 at Carroll Co., VA.  A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Co. C of 24th VA INF.  His service record follows.

     ARCHIBALD WHITT

     Enlisted in Co. C.(from Carroll Co.) on 12/2/1862 but went Absent WithOut Leave on 3/24/63 and never returned.[29]

         94.       vi.    Marnada F. (962);[30] born 1837.[31]

     She lived in 1860 in Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA with her father, James Whitt.[32]

         95.     vii.    James (963); born 1839 in Pulaski Co., VA;[33],[34] died of pneumonia on February 12, 1862 in Richmond, VA.[35]

     He was a cooper, living with his father, James Whitt in 1860 in Newbern, Pulaski Co., VA.[36] He began military service on May 27, 1861 at Lynchburg, VA.  A Civil War soldier, he enlisted in Co. E of 24th VA INF.  His service record follows.

     JAMES L. WHITT

     Enlisted in Co. E on 5/27/1861 at Lynchburg but died of pneumonia on 2/12/1862 in Richmond. He was born in Pulaski Co.[37]

 

     Lucy PELHAM (4583)[38],[39] was born in 1805 in Pulaski Co., VA.[40] She died after March 31, 1878 probably in Pulaski Co., VA.[41]

     There were no children of James Whitt (941) and Lucy Pelham (4583).

 

60.  Hezekiah WHITT (943); born 1796 in Montgomery Co., VA;[42],[43] married Sarah Howerton (951) January 26, 1815 in Montgomery Co., VA.[44]

     He lived in 1830 in Montgomery Co., VA.[45] He was a farmer with $4500 in real estate in 1850 in Montgomery Co., VA.[46]

 

     Sarah HOWERTON (951)[47],[48] was born in 1794 in VA.[49] She died circa 1855 in Montgomery Co., VA.[50]

     Children of Hezekiah Whitt (943) and Sarah Howerton (951) were as follows:

+       96.        i.    Julia Ann (881), born 1821 in Montgomery Co., VA; married Reazon V. Godby (880).

         97.        ii.    Jeremiah Page (952); born 1823 in VA.[51],[52]

     He was a farmer, living with his father, Hezekiah Whitt in 1850 in Montgomery Co., VA.[53] He began military service on September 10, 1861 at Christiansburg, VA.  A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Co. E of 54th VA INF as a private.  His service record follows.

 

     Jeremiah Whitt's Civil War Service.

     He is listed in The Roster of Confederate Soldiers, 1861-1865.  The CSA Service Records for the 54th VA INF show his service also.

     According to Sherwood and Weaver (p. 6; 54th VA INF) Co. E of the 54th VA INF was the Montgomery Greys from Montgomery County, VA.  The 1860 Montgomery VA Census lists Jeremiah P. Whitt on page 646.  He was still living with his father Hezekiah Whitt.

     CSA Service Records for the 54th VA INF show that Jeremiah Page Whitt enlisted in Co. E as a Private on Sep. 10, 1861 in Christiansburg, VA.  His term was for 12 months.  He is found on the two surviving muster rolls.  The first shows he was present from Sept. 10, 1861 to June, 1862 and the second shows he was present from July 9 to Dec. 31, 1863.

     A Register of the Confederate States Hospital in Petersburg, VA shows his presence there on Dec. 26, 1862.    

         98.      iii.    Lockett (953); born 1826 in VA.[54]

     She lived in 1850 in Montgomery Co., VA with her father, Hezekiah Whitt.[55]

         99.       iv.    Sarah (954); born 1829 in VA.[56]

       100.       v.    Hezekiah (955); born 1833 in VA.[57],[58]

       101.       vi.    Milburn (956); born 1835 in VA.[59],[60]

     He was a farmer with $250 in personal property, living with father, Hezekiah Whitt in 1860 in Montgomery Co., VA.[61]

     Milburn Whitt began military service on September 10, 1861 at Christiansburg, VA.  A Civil War soldier, he enlisted in Co. E of the 54th VA INF.  His service record follows.

     Whitt, Milburn: Co. E.  Enlisted on Sep.10,1861 at Christiansburg, VA.  Present on Jan. 1, 1863 and Dec. 31, 1863.  Resident of Shawsville, Montgomery Co., VA.[62],[63]

 

65.  John H. WHITT (947); born January 26, 1816 in Montgomery Co., VA;[64],[65] married Pamelia A. Miller (948) September 11, 1847 in Pulaski Co., VA;[66],[67] died February 14, 1885 at age 69.[68]

     He lived in 1850 in Montgomery Co., VA.[69] He was a farmer with $175 in personal property in 1860 in Montgomery Co., VA.[70]

 

     Pamelia A. MILLER (948) was born in 1820 in VA.[71],[72]

     Children of John H. Whitt (947) and Pamelia A. Miller (948) all born in VA were as follows:
