70.  Burwell5 HYLTON (John4, Elijah3, George2, John1); born December 28, 1801 in Montgomery Co., VA;[1] married Mary Ann Slusher March 4, 1823 in Montgomery Co., VA;[2] died August 30, 1883 in Floyd Co., VA, at age 81.[3]

     He was farmer between 1850 and 1860 in Floyd Co., VA with $2000 in real estate in 1850 and then $1440 in real estate and $1385 in personal property in 1860.[4],[5]

     Mary Ann SLUSHER; daughter of Christopher Slusher was born on April 26, 1803 in VA. She died on July 7, 1888 at age 85. [6],[7]

     Children of Burwell5 Hylton and Mary Ann Slusher all born in Floyd Co., VA, were as follows:

+       198.          i.     Ira Slusher6 Hylton, born September 6, 1825; married Eunice Cox; married Angeline Simmons.

+       199.         ii.     Riley H. Hylton, born May 26, 1827; married Hannah Wade.

          200.      iii.     Julie A. Hylton; born November 28, 1829;[8],[9] died March 9, 1909 at age 79.[10]

+       201.        iv.     Lorenzo Dow Hylton, born August 16, 1830; married Barbara Ellen Huff.

+       202.         v.     Nathan Hylton, born November 24, 1831; married Dicea Wade; married Octavia Graham.

          203.        vi.     Jacob S. Hylton; born November 1, 1833.[11],[12]

          204.     vii.     John H. Hylton; born May 30, 1835; married Mary L. Weeks July 11, 1864.[13],[14]

     He began military service on May 16, 1861 when he enlisted in the 24th VA INF on at the Floyd Court House.  Age 26, carpenter.  Admitted to Chimborazo Hospital with debility on May 4, 1862 but returned to duty on May 22, 1862.  John was a participant and survivor of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, PA on Jul 3, 1863.  Wounded at Drewry's Bluff and admitted to Chimborazo Hospital on May 16, 1864 with a gunshot wound to the right forearm.  Returned to duty on Sep 23, 1864.  Furloughed on May 31, 1864.  Captured at High Bridge on Apr 6, 1865.  Released from Point Lookout on Jun 3, 1865.[15],[16]

          205.     viii.     Mathias Hylton; born December 2, 1836; married Ellen W. Weeks October 23, 1866. [17],[18]

     He began military service on May 16, 1861 when he enlisted in Co. A of the 24th VA INF at the Floyd Court House.  Age 24, farmer.  Promoted to Corporal on Oct. 31, 1861.  Captured at Williamsburg, VA.  Reduced to ranks on May 10, 1862.  Absent sick Aug 10, 1862.   Participant and survivor of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, PA on Jul 3, 1863.  Promoted to Corporal Jun 30, 1864.  Admitted to Farmville Hospital on Apr 2, 1865 with gunshot wound and sent to Lynchburg, VA on Apr 6, 1865.[19],[20]

          206.        ix.     Eve Elizabeth Hylton; born September 29, 1838.[21],[22]

          207.         x.     Nancy Isabell Hylton; born June 10, 1840; died December 10, 1899 at age 59; unmarried. [23],[24]

+       208.        xi.     Henderson Hylton, born 1843; married Margaret Weeks.

          209.      xii.     Ananias Hylton; born September 28, 1843;[25],[26] died November 18, 1864 in Camp Douglas, IL, at age 21; cause of death was pleurities; buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Chicago, IL.[27]

     He began military service on March 28, 1862 when he enlisted in Co. A of the 54th VA INF in Richmond, VA. Ananias was wounded in action at Chickamauga, GA on Sep 19, 1863.  On clothing receipt dated Apr 14, 1864.   He was taken prisoner of war at Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, GA on Jul 20, 1864 and sent to Camp Douglas, IL where he was held until he died there on Nov 18, 1864 of pleuritis and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Chicago, IL.  Resident of Floyd Co., VA  born Sep 28, 1843.[28]

          210.     xiii.     Levi Woodbury Hylton; born December 22, 1845; married Emaline Dickerson December 12, 1871. [29]

     He began military service circa 1861.  A "L. W. Hylton" enlisted in Co. A of the 24th VA INF.  Died on May 13, 1916.[30]

          211.     xiv.     Katherine Lucretia Hylton (1860 Census shows "Cynthia A") born July 9, 1847; married John H. Weeks circa 1870. [31],[32]

 

 

71.  Bryant A.5 HYLTON (John4, Elijah3, George2, John1); born March 11, 1807 in Montgomery Co., VA;[33] married Nancy Ellen Wade May 17, 1827 in Montgomery Co., VA;[34] died January 13, 1892 in Floyd Co., VA, at age 84; cause "la grippe."[35]

     He ran a store near Myra Fork, and later ran a Jacksonville hotel in Jacksonville, VA (Now Floyd, VA).  He became sheriff from 1848-1850.[36]   He was a farmer in the Western District of  Floyd Co., VA with $6000 in real estate in 1850; in 1860 he was listed as Hotel Proprietor in the town of Floyd Court House with $10,670 in real estate and $534 in personal property.[37],[38]

     A slave, Eliz. Jane, was born to Mary in 1853 in Floyd Co., VA.  The owner was Bryant Hylton.  In 1858, another slave Cesla? was born to Mary whose owner was Bryant Hylton.[39]

     Nancy Ellen WADE; daughter of Anderson & Polly Wade was born on September 20, 1809 in Franklin, VA.[40] She died on January 25, 1892 in Floyd Co., VA, at age 82; cause "la grippe."[41]

+       172.      iii.     Lewis Jackson Hylton, born February 11, 1831 in Floyd Co., VA; married Emelia Edna Hylton.

          215.        iv.     Amanda Allie Hylton; born 1833 in Floyd Co., VA;[44] married Dr. Benjamin Porter Elliott February 16, 1853.[45]

          216.         v.     James M. Hylton; born 1837 in Floyd Co., VA.[46]

          217.        vi.     Ballard P. Hylton; born 1840 in Floyd Co., VA.[47]

     He began military service on May 16, 1861 when he enlisted in the 24th VA INF, Co. A at the Floyd Court House.  21, at the time, and a student.  Severely wounded at Frayser's Farm and admitted to Richmond Hospital on Sep. 1, 1862.  Furloughed on Nov. 17, 1862 for 90 days.[48]
