James Russell Walton was raised by his aunt Mary Russell, who married James Grieve. He served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, seeing action in the Northwest Frontier Campaign of India in 1897-1898, and in the Boer War in South Africa in 1901. After his discharge, he became a shoemaker in North Berwick.
