Part 4: The Landis Battery: A Missouri Artillery Unit History and Experiences of a well known Missouri Command The history of some of the maneuvers and experiences during the Civil War of the Landis Battery, C. S. A., as contributed to the Republic by Mr. John C. Landis, is filled with interesting incidents. The hardships and unique bits of recreation hat this division of the Confederate Army met will doubtless be personally recalled by many others besides Mr. Landis, and the following brief extracts from the company’s long history of struggle and warfare furnish entertaining reading for others besides old soldiers.
Part 4: The Landis Battery: A Missouri Artillery Unit History and Experiences of a well known Missouri Command The Quartermaster , Commissary and Ordnance departments were all badly in need of supplies. Through the exertions of Major Thomas. I. Snead of General Price’s staff, the Confederate States had promised to supply a battery of field artillery, and an order was procured for a new battery, which had just been completed at Memphis, Tenn. To ma the battery, John C. Landis of St. Joseph, at that time Major and Chief of Artillery, Fifth Division, M. S. G., was commissioned Captain Artillery, C. S. A. He at once proceeded to recruit a company for the Confederate States Service. The company was organized with John O. Landis Captain, W. H. Moiler of St. Joseph, and John M. Langan of Saline County, Missouri, First Lieutenants, A. M. Harris Second Lieutenant. Although he full compliment of men had not yet been enrolled, as soon as the required number of horses has been procured the company left Springfield. This was about the middle of January, 1862. The company was under orders to proceed to a point in Arkansas, there to receive the guns which had been shipped to that point from Memphis, Tenn. After receiving the supplies the battery began the march to rejoin the army in accordance with insurrections.
