Clayton Parish Church - St John

Clayton Parish Church

St John's was recorded in the Domesday book. There are still some remains of a Saxon church - but most is Norman. The chancel dates from the 11th century.

The Domesday book states: "There is a church and 23 acres of medow."

There are wall paintings inside the church thought to be from the 12th century. These are similar to ones at Coombes, Hardham and Plumpton. They were discovered in the 1890s and have been very well restored.

On the Downs above Clayton are the two windmills - "Jack and Jill". "Jack" is a black tower mill - built in 1876 and worked until 1908. "Jill" is a white post mill built in 1821. Not built in Clayton the mill was towed up on the Downs by oxen.
