Hangleton Parish Church - St Helen

Hangleton Parish Church

next >

When it was built, St Helen's Church was amongst a small downland village. All that remains today are the church, Hangleton Manor and the dovecote. In the 1950's the farmland around the church was built on and the church now sits at the top of Hangleton Green - part of Hove.

Hangleton is mentioned briefly in Black's Guide to Sussex (1861) as Hankleton. It is described as a small hamlet, with Early English church and Tudor manor house. The population was just 57.

The 11th century flint nave is the oldest architechtural structure surviving in Brighton or Hove. The tower and a chancel date back to the 13th century.
