from Baltimore County Public Library: Streetscape of Charles
Street, Baltimore, looking south from the Pennsylvania Railroad Station, after
1929. Four hotels adjacent to the station at that time are seen: Hotel Charles,
Kruger's Hotel, Arundel Hotel, and Hotel Plaza. In the left middle distance is
the Belvedere Hotel on Chase Street. In the immediate left foreground is a
portion of the brick wall lining the Jones Falls. The vantage point for the
photographer was the roof of the railroad station, formerly known as Union Depot
or Union Station. It was a common practice for commercial travellers to take a
sleeper overnight to a city, find a hotel near the station to check into in
order to freshen up before an 8 or 9 am meeting. From Maryland Historical Society: Sherwood Hotel |
