The Work family into which Minerva Daily
married, has been proved to be an interesting
one. It can only be speculated with some
certainty that Minerva's husband, Dr. Samuel M.
Work, was the son of Samuel and that Henry Work
who appears in his household is not his father,
but his uncle. Unfortunately, Dr. Samuel
Work's age has not been recorded consistently in
the records and only a small family biography
lists a Samuel M. Work as the son of Samuel, and
also as a physician. No other Samuel
located in the records was a physician, and no
Samuel matching his age, was listed as a child in
Henry Work's household. These two facts
lean more toward the probability that
Samuel (not Henry), was his father. Because the family was an
interesting one and was listed frequently in the
census records, several of the families were
followed. The family originally came from
Pennsylvania where John embarked with his brother
Henry from their home in Red Stone, PA, thirty
miles above Pittsburg for the settlements at the
falls of the Ohio where they were iron
workers. In the spring of 1804 when they
were planning on moving to Indiana, Henry fell
ill of fever and died. His brother John
then took Henry's widow and her children with him
to Indiana and settled in Charlestown on a farm
later known as Dodd's Farm. He was a
surveyor, a mining engineer, and mill
wright. He began building mills in 1806 and
at one time had three flouring mills, four saw
mills, a powder mill, and a stillery all in
successful operation. After his death, his
son operated the mill until 1854.
John's wife was
Ann Ried (1734-1824), and their children (who
were born in Lancaster, PA) were Henry Work who
was born in 1754), John Work who was born in
1760, and William Work who went to Virginia and
had a son William.
Of the three sons,
only John was followed. He was born on 09
December 1760 and married Sarah Jackson who was
the daughter of Robert and Annie Jackson.
She was born on 01 January 1769 and died 24 March
1854. John died on 14 Feb 1832 and was the
father of: Mary born 1788; Martha born 1790;
Rebecca born 1792; Elizabeth born 1794 - all born
in Fayette Co. PA; son John born 1797; Sarah born
1800; Robert born 1802; Anna born 1807; John R.
and Robert (twins) born in 1810; and Martha born
1817 - all born in Clark County, Indiana.
It's possible that the two older John and Roberts
died in infancy and the twins were named after
them.
John R.
Work, the son of John and Sarah
(Jackson), was born on 21 September 1810 in Clark
County, Indiana. He married Julia Ann
Coombs, the daughter of John Coombs on 14 July
1831. He operated his father's tunnel mill
from 1832-1854 and died in Bedford, Arkansas on
07 January 1859. The Children of John
Reid Work and Julia Ann were: William R. Work who
married Margaret Holland; Susie Work who died in
infancy; Sarah Ann Work who married William Culp
of Collins, MO; John Work who was a newspaper man
who died in Central City, CO; and Robert Work.
Of this family,
William Work was located in the Clark County
census records. According to these records,
he was born about 1832-1835 and married in about
1860 to Margaret Holland who was born in Illinois
or Kentucky in 1836. Her mother was Nancy
Bryam who was a cousin of John Calhoun.
Listed in June 1860 in the town of
Jeffersonville, William is listed as a 28
year-old prison guard with a personal estate of
$100, and his wife Margaret is listed as age
27. In August of 1870, William R. Work is listed
as a 36 year-old physician with real estate of
$3,000, and an personal estate also of
$3,000. His wife is listed as 34 years of
age and their children Richard age 9 who was born
about 1861, and daughter Sunshine age 6 who was
born about 1864 and later married J.W. Warren of
Sedalia, Missouri.
A Bible which was published in
1812 and had come into the possession of Mrs.
Anne Gwin Vaugh of Natchez, Mississippi and
listed the following marriages, births, and
deaths which are of some interest.
In other family
records in Clark County, there was located a note
indicating Henry Work was born on 10 Dec 1746 in
Franklin County, Pennsylvania and states he was
the son of Andrew Work and his wife Isabelle
(Koyle). These notes indicate that he and
his brother John came from Lancaster, PA to
Franklin County while it was still undivided from
Cumberland County to that part of Peters Township
which later became Montgomery Township; and that
he and John were on the original tax list for
Cumberland in 1772 listed as free men. It
was said that Henry served under Captain William
Huston 1780-1781 and was elected Sheriff of
Franklin County, serving in that position until
1793. His will was filed in Chambersburg
and he had received 1417 acres of land in
Kentucky from two land grants (one in 1786 the
other in 1798), which he bequeathed to his son
Samuel.
Henry's wife Sarah
was the daughter of Edward Crawford and Sarah
(Sterrett). She was born on 29 July 1752 in
Fayetteville, PA and died 10 Sep 1833.
Henry died 06 March 1819 and was buried in Old
White Graveyard in Mercersburg, PA. Their
children were born in Franklin County, PA and
were: Edward Work born 04 Dec 1773 and preceded
his father in death; Andrew Work born 27 Feb
1775; Isabella Work born 04 Oct 1776 and
preceeded her father in death, having been the
wife of John Dickey who was a prominent resident
of McConnellsburg, PA, and the mother of Isabelle
Dickey who was born 30 Oct 1807; Samuel C. Work
who was mentioned in his father's will and who
married Polly Digger; Elizabeth Work who was born
23 Sep 1778 and who had married Samuel Clubertson
in March of 1798, she dying between May and Oct
of 1799, her husband following later in 1800;
Martha Jane Work born 25 Sep 1780 who married
William Crawford 27 Feb 1823 and died 17 Aug
1836; Jesse Crawford Work who was born 16 Jan
1785 and married Elisa Maxwell on 26 Nov 1828 and
died 1847; Henry Work who born 30 Nov 1787 and
married on 10 Feb 1820 Susan Cowen/Cowan and died
13 Mar 1863; and Sarah "Sally" Work
born 21 Oct 1790 and married 18 May 1820 William
McDowell (1792-1862) and died on 29 August
1844.
Henry, the son of
Henry and Sarah Crawford-Work and grandson of
Andrew and Isabelle Koyle-Work, who was born in
1787 and died in 1863 was the father of Anna Work
who was born 16 June 1821 and was married to John
McKinstry - she died 04 Apr 1861; Henry Work born
26 June 1823 and died 1826; Sarah Crawford Work
who was born 30 Sep 1825 and died 06 Sep 1826;
Hugh Augustus Work born 15 June 1827 in
Mercersburg, PA; Joseph V. Work who was born 12
July 1829 near Chambersburg, PA; James Crawford
Work born 15 Aug 1831; Martha Jane Work born 12
June 1836 and died 12 Aug 1836; William C. Work
born 02 Nov 1833 and was killed in the Civil War
in 1864; David D. Work who was born 24 June 1837
and died 1898; Elizabeth B. Work who was born 12
April 1840; and Edward Work born 30 Nov 1842 and
died 22 Feb 1879.
The parents of the
following Samuel Work (who appears to be the
father of Dr. Samuel Work who married Minerva
Daily) is not known. His obituary says only
that he was a brother of W.H. Work, and an uncle
of Dr. W.F. Work and Hon. H.F. Work.
It doesn't seem
likely that he was the son of Samuel and Sarah
(Crawford) as that Samuel had married Polly
Digger and probably born earlier than this Samuel
who was born in Pennsylvania in 1787. This
Samuel married Elizabeth (Henley) who was born in
North Carolina in 1796, and enumerated together
in the 1850 Clark County census in the
township of Charlestown listed as a sixty-three
year old farmer born in Pennsylvania. His
wife Elizabeth is listed as age 52 born in North
Carolina, and the others listed in the household
were: Jesse age 22, Alexander C. 21, Samuel 16,
Sarah J. age 12 and John Stutesman age 21 all
born in Indiana.
The 1860 Clark County, Indiana Census for
Charlestown Township lists this family on June
14th: Samuel Work age 72, Alexander C. age 30,
Sarah age 28, and children Mabell age three and
Edgar age two all born in Indiana except for
Samuel.
The elderly Samuel
Work is listed in the 1870 Clark County Federal Census in
Charlestown Township on the 7th of July in the
household of of John Beggs and his wife Louisa
(Work) - daughter of Samuel. See the Census
Records for a more detailed listing of the
family.

| The following
Work family came to America as early as 1720 and
settled in Lancaster, PA and appears to be of the
same exact family as above, stating that Henry
Work came to Jefferson county, KY in 1800 and
lived there until 1802 at which time he
died. His wife then came to Clark County in
1802 and settled at Work's Landing on the Ohio
river and was the mother of Henry, Sarah who was
the wife of Mr. Parr (a Samuel Parr is listed in
the 1840 census one door down from John C.
Parker), and Samuel Work who married Elizabeth
Henley and reared ten children - one of which is
likely Dr. Samuel Work who married Minerva Daily.
Samuel's
wife Elizabeth Henley was born in North Carolina
in 1796, and they were enumerated together in the
1850 Clark County census in the
township of Charlestown with some of their
children. Listed as a 63 year old farmer
born in Pennsylvania who owns real estate
valued at $3,000, his wife Elizabeth aged 52 and
born in North Carolina, son Jesse age 22,
Alexander C. age 21, Samuel age 16 (whom it is
believed married Minerva Daily), and Sarah J. age
13. Also living in their household is 21
year-old John Stutesman.
Because
this appeared to be the family of Dr. Samuel Work
who married Minerva Daily, an attempt to trace
his brothers and sisters was made and the
information compiled; but before going into the
census records and listing these children as
heads of households with their families, they are
listed here.
|
| Malinda Work, oldest child of Samuel
and Elizabeth, was born about 1814 married
Benjamin F. Potts/Pottes who was born in Kentucky
in about 1810. They were located in the 1870 census and were living in
Jeffersonville Township. Ben F. Pottes was
listed as a 60 year-old Turnpike Gate Operator,
and Malinda was listed as having been born in
Virginia, was age 56 at the time the census was
taken on July 18th. The only other person
living in their household was 17 year-old Charles
Pottes who was born in Kentucky. - Although
Malinda's youngest sister Sarah (who married Mr.
Eversole) was not located in the census, it
should be noted that three doors down from
Malinda, lived the family of Elizabeth and
William Eversole, ages 45 of Ohio. William H. Work, the eldest son of Samuel
and Elizabeth Henley, was born on August 30, 1817
and married Mary (Fouts) on 22 April 1841 - their
children were Henry F. Work, a farmer who lived
in Washington Twp; Mary Elizabeth Work who
married William H. McIlvaine of Henry County, KY;
and William Fouts Work who was born on 27 August 1850 and was a doctor who began the
study of medicine under Dr. Samuel M. Work of
Charlestown, Indiana - this apparently being
Minerva's husband.
The Fouts living
in Washington Twp which were located in the 1850 and 1860 census records, the elder being
Lewis/Louis Fouts, a farmer, who had been born in
North Carolina in about 1778. His wife
Sarah had been born about 1785 and died before
1860. Living with them in 1850 was 25 year-old Dougan also a
farmer who was born in IN and 19 year-old
Clarinda.
In 1860 the family of Thomas and
Clarinda Fouts is listed in New Washington Twp
as: Thomas, age 35, farmer with real estate
$10,280 and personal estate worth $3,600 who was
born in Indiana; Clarinda age 30; Eugene age 10;
Lewis N. age 6; Allen W. age 3; the elder Lewis
Fouts (apparently the father of Thomas) age 82;
and Jacob D. Fouts, age 19.
An elder Jacob
Fouts who was born in North Carolina about 1782
and was probably the brother of Louis, appeared
in the 1850 census in Washington
Twp. The census enumerated the end of
October listed him as a 68 year-old farmer with
wife Mary age 62, born about 1788 in North
Carolina, and 21 year-old John C. Fouts who was
born in Indiana. - The family was followed and
located in the 1860 census taken the 26th of
August and listed Jacob then as a 78 year-old
farmer with real estate valued at $12,670.
His wife Mary is also still living, listed as age
72.
The dwelling
preceding Jacob's household, is the family of
John C. Fouts who was born in Indiana in about
1829. John C. Fouts is listed as a 31
year-old farmer with his wife Hester Ann age 23
who was born in Indiana in about 1837, one
year-old Luella, and 16 year-old Eliza Fouts.
The other Fouts
who all resided in Washington Twp were: Hamilton
or Edward Fouts (name difficult to read) who was
born in North Carolina in about 1804. He
was listed in the 1850 census as a 46 year-old farmer; his
wife Martha age 36 born in IN; Isabel age 16;
Mustow? age 13; Mary J. age 11; Jacob age 9;
Eliza H. age 5; and Hamilton age three.
Thomas D. Fouts
who was born in Indiana in about 1819 was also
listed in the 1850 census with his wife Lilia who was
born about 1823 in Indiana and their children
Jacob age 3; Andrew J. age 5; and Mary also age
3.
L.D. Fouts who was
born in Indiana in 1824 and appears to be the son
of Hiram (1808) was listed in the 1860 census
with his wife Mariah who was born about 1831 in
Germany. Also listed in their household is
52 year-old Hiram Fouts; John F. Crove age 17 a
college student; Joshua Tuell a 20 year-old farm
laborer; Henrietta Fouts 14 years of age; and
Elizabeth Neitz age four.
Returning to the
children of Samuel Work and Elizabeth (Henley),
their son Andrew J. Work who was born about 1820 in
Indiana, married Eliza Jane (Hostetler) on the
16th day of March 1848. They were listed in
Owen Twp as - Andrew J. Work, age 40, a farmer
with real estate valued at $12,000 and a personal
estate worth $2,800. His wife Eliza age 38;
and children - Minerva age 19, Julia D. age 16;
Sarah A. age 11; William A. age 7; Samuel M. age
4; and Marietta age two. Also living with
them is a 19 year-old farm hand J.W. Spencer; and
14 year-old Albert Hartley.
|
| Louisa Work, Samuel and Elizabeth's
daughter who had married John Beggs on 25
December 1846 is listed in the 1870 census. - Listed as
head of household is 45 year-old John Beggs, his
wife Louisa (Work) age 47, daughter Sallie age
20, and Flora age 16. Her father Samuel is
also listed in the household as an 83 year-old
retired farmer (he appears to have been widowed
by 1860 - see son Alexander). In addition to her
father, there is what appears to be a nephew of
Samuel's late wife Elizabeth, a Hadley Henley, 17
years of age who is attending school. It should also be noted
that next door to the John Beggs household is the
home of 68 year-old James Beggs, his wife Matilda
age 67, Susan age 25, and Jane age 23. It
seems likely that these are the parents and
sisters of Louisa's husband John Beggs, but
again, this is merely speculation.
|
| Clarissa Ann Work, the daughter of Samuel
& Elizabeth (Henley), who was born about
1824, married James C. Crawford on 04 February
1841. She was located with her husband in
the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Clark County Federal
census records. Listed as a 38 year-old
farmer in Charlestown in 1850, James Crawford is head of the
household which includes his wife Clarissa age
25, daughter Sarah age 8, and daughter Louisa age
six. Living in Charlestown in 1860 , James
Crawford was listed as a 43 year-old farmer born
in IN, his wife Clarissa (Work) listed as age 38,
daughter Louisa age 10, Isabella age 9, and Alice
age six. In
1870 the family was still
living in Charlestown, James C. Crawford a 52
year-old farmer, his wife Clarissa age 46,
daughter Lucy 20, Isabelle 17, and Alice
fifteen.
A search of the
census records found other Crawfords, but could
not place James with his parents. These
Crawford which were located were: William
Crawford born about 1775 in PA, and was living in
Owen Twp in 1860 with what appears to be his
daughter Jane who was born in PA in about 1810;
James F. Crawford who was born in VA in about
1820 and was living in Charlestown in 1860 with
wife Sarah and children Mary, Elizabeth, James,
Emovetta, Thomas F., and Martha; and James M.
Crawford who was born in KY in about 1836 and was
a Methodist Minister living in Washington Twp in
1860 with his 25 year-old wife Clarissa and their
three month-old son Edward.
|
| Jesse H. Work, son of Samuel and
Elizabeth, was born about 1828 and married Sarah
J. Bower on 01 October 1850. Listed in Charlestown in the
1860 Census Jesse is a 33 year-old farm, his wife
Sarah age 30, and children William age 8, and
Samuel B. age six, both boys born in Indiana. By June of 1860 Samuel's wife Elizabeth (Henley)
had died and Samuel was listed as head of the
household as a 72 year-old farmer with real
estate valued at $8,800 and a personal estate
worth $700. Living with him in this
Charlestown household was his son Alexander C.
Work (born about 1829) who owned real estate
valued at $2,500 and a personal estate valued at
$2,000. Alexander had, since the 1850
census, married 28 year-old Sarah who had been
born in Indiana. Their small children
living in the household were three year-old
Maybell, and two year old Edgar. The family
of Alexander was not located in the 1870 census
taken in Charlestown in July, so it is possible
they had moved.

| Samuel M. Work, apparently
the son of Samuel and Elizabeth, was born about
1834 and married Minerva Daily (daughter of David
W. and Mary Shirley-Daily) on 01 February
1858. One record indicates that Samuel's
full name was Samuel Marion Work and that he was
born on 27 May 1833, but this fact is not
definite as his parents were not listed in that
record. It is, however, without a doubt
that the following Samuel located in the census
records was indeed Minerva Daily's husband.
They were
listed in 1860 census records. The
census enumerated in Charlestown on June 2nd
lists the family as such: Samuel M. Work age 28,
a physician with real estate valued at $3,000 and
a personal estate worth $2,000; wife Minerva F.
(Daily) age 27; one year-old daughter Mary E.; 12
year-old servant Phebe Davis who also attends
school; and 66 year-old Henry Work, a farmer with
real estate valued at $12,000 and a personal
estate worth $5,000 - it is speculated that he is
Samuel's uncle and not father.
The family is then
listed in the 1870 census living in Charlestown:
Samuel M. Work, a 36 year-old physician with real
estate valued at $3,000 and a personal estate
worth $3,000; wife Minerva age 36; daughter
Mollie (same as Mary E. in 1860); and daughter
Estella age nine. Henry Work is again
listed in the household as a 76 year-old retired
farmer with a personal estate worth
$10,000. In conclusion to Samuel and
Minerva Daily-Work, although they were said to
have had four children, only these two were
located - Mary E. "Molly" Work born
about 1859; and Estella Work born about
1861.
