In 2012 this album came into the loving care of Sandy (Fox) Whitney, great great granddaughter of Sarah (Stratton), wife of Abraham Richard Fox who lived near Reelsville, Putnam Co., Indiana. It is believed that all the photos in the album are related to the Daily, Fox, Stratton and Girton families although many, such as this young man, are not identified.

Sandy is attempting to identify all persons in the album and learn more about each of them through additional research. If you can help identify or add further information to this photo, please contact us.

Additional information about photographer J.G. Swain: Josiah Gaylord Swain, professional photographer, was the son of Jesse Nolan Swain and Mary Catherine (Payne) who were married in Kentucky in 1843. He was a resident of Putnam Co., Indiana in 1860 where he was enumerated with his parents, and living nearby was the Elisha Mullinix with his 2nd wife, Hannah (Hunt) family. Elisha was the brother of Silas Andrew Mullinix, who took as his 3rd wife, Eliza Fox - she being the sister of Abraham R. Fox, who had married Sarah (Stratton). It should be noted that Elisha Mullinix was an early pioneer of Jefferson Twp., in Putnam County, Indiana - he and Silas were both listed there in the 1830 census.

In 1870 J.G. Swain was again enumerated with his parents in Cloverdale, Putnam Co., Indiana but by 1880 he was head of household and living in Worthington, Greene Co., Indiana where he was listed as a photographer. Residing near him was a James Mahan, possible relation of Charles Mahan who was born about 1808 and was the 2nd husband of Elizabeth F. (Daily) Stratton, widow of Stephen and mother of Sarah (Stratton) Fox. Also residing near J.G. Swain at this time was the family of Wesley Fox and wife Eliza with their two children Ada and Homer. By 1900, J.G. Swain was living in Harrison Twp., Clay Co., Indiana where he was listed as having been born in Kentucky in November of 1847. His wife, Clara is listed as born August 1850 in Indiana and marriage records indicate the couple was married in Owen Co., Indiana on 04 Jun 1871. Their neighbors at this time include the James Allen and James Mahan families. In 1910, Josiah and Clara are residing on E. Washington in Martinsville, Morgan Co., Indiana and at this time he is no longer working as a photographer. His neighbors are: Stephen J. Cox, Willis and Amanda Cox, and Roscoe Moss - surnames familiar to the relations of Sarah (Stratton), once again indicating in this brief summarization that the photographer J.G. Swain was undoubtedly acquainted with the Stratton-Fox families of Indiana.
