Tuttle - Descendants of Oliver A. Tuttle

The name spelled TUTTLE, TUTHILL, TUTLE, TOOTHILL referred to a dweller at a toot-hill, i.e., a hill with a good outlook to detect an enemy's approach; one who came from Tothill (lookout hill), the name of places in Lincolnshire and Middlesex. Families of the name acquired properties under the Cromwellian & Restoration settlements in County Limerick & other parts of the Country. According to American Surnames, the form of O'Toole is found in south Munster. Toothill becomes Tuttle- a place name, "lookout hill."

It should be noted that there is an Oliver Tuttle of Claremont , New Hampshire who had a son Oliver. He went to Otisco, Onondaga Co., New York and died at the age of 95, however, there is no information on the son Oliver. From the book Descendants of Wm. & Elizabeth Tuttle, there was an Oliver Tuttle who married a Hannah, he having been born 28 Dec 1739, though no connection has yet been made.

A look into the 1850 census records for Colesville, Broome Co., New York, does not locate an Oliver Tuttle. The following is the descendancy of Oliver Tuttle of Crawford, Pennsylvania who by 1860 was residing in Colesville. This information has been compiled by Janice Tuttle Friel, who is seeking further information on Oliver.

Oliver A. Tuttle was born about 1823 in Titusville, Crawford Co., Pennsylvania but by 1860 he was residing in Colesville, Broome Co., New York where he enlisted in the Civil War on 27 Aug 1862 as a private at the age of 39. He served in Company F of the 137th Infantry Regiment of New York, his pension papers indicating that he was 6 foot tall with a fair complexion, brown hair and blue eyes.

During the war he was first admitted to the hospital at Baltimore, Maryland at the first of November in 1862, and later at Chattanooga, Tennessee the following year until transferred to Blandeburg, Maryland in November of 1864. There he remained until April of 1865. He had served under the command of Captain Shipman and was discharged on 09 Jun 1865 at the age of 42.

Oliver had married Elizabeth Alma Saunders on 08 Apr 1848 in Greene, Chenango Co., New York. She was born about 1831 in New York and was the daughter of John and Alma E. She had been enumerated with Oliver in the 1860 census residing in Colesville, and her parents John Sanders, age 48 and Alma E., age 48, were living two houses down from them.

In 1870 Oliver was still living in Colesville, where he was enumerated in the census living in the household of Uruis E. Porter, who was listed as head of her household, and age 34. It is speculated that this might have been Oliver's sister. His wife was listed in a separate household which included the other children.

On 13 Jan 1878, Oliver married (2) Eliza Harriett Bowman in Wellsburg, Erie Co., Pennsylvania. Eliza, also known as Hattie, was born in May 1845 in Pennsylvania and was listed with Oliver in the 1880 census. They were residing in Kelloggville, Ashtabula Co., Ohio where Oliver was a wagon and carriage maker, and at the time had a son Arthur, who was listed as one year old. During this same time, Oliver's first wife Elizabeth was residing in Windsor, Broome Co., New York and listed as head of household which included her daughter Julia Huftellin, and three year-old grandson Charles Huftellin.

After Oliver's death on 08 Apr 1899 in Williamsfield Twp., Ashtabula Co., Ohio, his widow's pension listed his minor children as Pearl M., James W., and Willis L. Tuttle.

In 1900 his daughter Julia was living with her sister, Eva Ingersoll, in Coventry, Chenango Co., New York and was listed as born in June 1865, a widow and mother of two children, both living. In 1913 Oliver's widow Harriett was residing at 265 Prospect Street in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

Note: Oliver was often listed as Oliver O. Tuttle in the census records.
