Spelled various ways (Tuell, Tuel, &
Tull), this family appears sporadically in the
Clark County, IN census records. The eldest
of this family was located in the 1850 census his
name spelled Robert Tuelle. According to
this document, he was born about 1800 in
Pennsylvania and was married to a woman by the
name of Amy who was born about 1801 in New
Jersey. They were listed in Owen township
(recorded on 07 Nov 1850), Robert a 50 year old
farmer, and their children Robert L. (1828),
Margaret (1833) George (1835), Mary (1838), Amy
A. (1841), Angeline (1842), and John
(1844). All the children except Robert and
Margaret were born in Indiana, the two eldest
having been born in Ohio. This information disclaims
the above Mary Tuel as having been the one who
married Eli Daily (son of Philip & Mary Wise)
in 1836 as she is far too young, and the other
Tuels listed hereafter are younger even than
Robert, nor does Eli's name appear in any census
records of Clark County. Listed with him,
is what appears to be his mother, Mary J. who was
born about 1797 in KY. Joseph was a farmer
and had the following children: Joshua (1840),
Keyial? (1848), James (1850), John (1857) and six
month old Dora B. who were all born in Indiana.
A Philip
P. Tuel is listed as having been born about
1818. His name certainly leads us to
believe that he might have been a nephew of Mary
Tuel-Daily. Born in Indiana in about 1818
and listed in the 1870 Clark county census, his
wife's name is not legible and only her initials
are listed appearing to be KK. The family
was living in Charlestown and the census was
enumerated on the 7th of July listing Philip as a
52 year old farmer worth $5000 in real estate and
$600 in personal property. The eldest child
listed is a daughter, Winifred (1851) who is
listed as a teacher, George (1852), Mary E.
(1854), Homer (1859) and Kate J. Tuel (1864) all
who were born in Indiana.
The most
interesting of the Tuel family found in the
census records is another Philip P. Tuel who was
born in about 1822. He was first located in
the 1850 census record appearing to have been
newly married, and upon further research it was
learned that his wife's maiden name was Runyan,
as was the head of the household in which they
were living. This man apparently her
father. Philip P. Tuel and Rebecca Runyan
were married on the 2nd of June in 1849, and the
census was taken October 25th 1850 listing them
in Charlestown as follows: Head of
household, Isaac Runyan, age 53 a farmer born in
New Jersey about 1797; his wife Mary born about
1798 in New Jersey, son Francis (1827), Catherine
(1833), David (1836), Mary (1838); and the young
newlyweds, Philip P. Tuell a 28 year old merchant
born in Indian about 1822 and his wife Rebecca
who was born in Indiana about 1823.
The
Runyan family also appears living in, near and
next to the Daily families throughout the census
records, so again, it is possible these Philip
Tuels are nephews or cousins of the Mary Tuel who
married Eli Daily, son of Philip and Mary Wise.
