William was born about
1840 in Monroe county, and was the son of Louis
and Sophia (Gregory) who had come to the county
in June of 1833 accompanied by Lewis' sister who
was the wife of Horace Hill, came on the first
steamer, Walk-in-the-Water, to land at Toledo and
then to the territory of Michigan which had been
settled by only twenty-five or thirty families in
what would become Summerfield Township.
William
and Phoebe were the parents of at least four
children, their youngest daughter, Frances
Amelia, who was born in 1866, became the wife of
Richard George Peters, grandson of Richard for
whom Petersburg was named.
