tintype of the Joyce Lang Collection, was labeled
"Grandpa Smith." Initially, it was not

was, but by time tintypes had come into existence
in 1856, Richard Smith, the father of Samuel, had
already died. Also looking at the features of
Samuel and comparing him to other photos taken
when he was younger, it is now believed that this
is indeed Samuel Smith. Samuel Smith was
born in Saratoga Co., New York in 1827 and was
the son of Richard and Sarah "Sally"
Peck. He married Cornelia (Buck) in Warren Co.,
Illinois on 29 Aug 1849. They were the parents of
thirteen children: Ryan, Roland, Alice, Mindwell,
Sidney, Seth, Cora, Charles, Norman, Warren,
Olive, Lucretia and Ira Smith.
