They were enumerated in the 1850 Madison Co., IL census residing in Township 3N Rage 8W with one son Jacob Miller Whiteside who was born about January 1850, listed as nine months old.

There is in the mortality schedule for the year 1850 a one year old John Whiteside who died in July of "Brain Cong" and it is speculated this may have been the first born son of John and Mary.

The husband of Mary, is the son of Samuel Whiteside and Nancy (Miller) who are also listed in the 1850 census for Madison County. Samuel was born in 1783 in North Carolina and is said to have served in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and that Whiteside County, Illinois was named in honor of him. He died in 1868 in Christian County, Illinois and was the father of eleven children, John Perry being the ninth in that order.

There are other researchers who believe that Mary might have married a second time after the death of her husband John and that she later removed to Houston, Texas where she died in about 1866 to 1868. According to this research, she had married Henry J. Holmes sometime before 1854. Henry having been born 10 Jan 1834 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., Missouri and was buried in Houston, Harris Co., Texas.

From census and marriage records, it was further speculated that the children of Mary and Henry Holmes were as follows: Henry born about 1854 in Collinsville, Madison Co., Illinois and married Elivira Lafour; Howard born about 1857 in Illlinois; Donsena born about March 1860 in Texas and died there before 1870; Edwin J. born in Texas about 1863; and Clara Ella born 02 Oct 1866 in Collinsville, Madison Co., Illinois and listed as having married (1) Elisha Nicholas Wallis and (2) Henry Wade Wallis.
