Abraham "Abe" Slayback was born in Butler County, Ohio in 1841. His parents are still not known, though it had been speculated he might have been the son of Solomon and Elly (House). No information has yet surfaced to prove this, but a narrative written by researcher Joyce Franz, the great-great granddaughter of Abe, offers a couple interesting theories as well as known documentation.

Abe appears in Boone County Kentucky where he married Mary Elizabeth Deer on the 16th of October 1862. Two years later at the age of 24, he was drafted and served in the 55th KY Volunteer Infantry from Boone County.

He is listed on the Company Muster-in Descriptive Roll dated 14 Nov 1864 at Covington, KY as a farmer, with blue eyes, light hair and complexion and five foot five inches in height.

Abraham died 13 February 1896 in Burlington, Boone County, Kentucky, and is laid to rest at the Burlington I.O.O.F. Cemetery, as is his wife Mary (Deer).
