RESIDED: Born in East Calais, VT, he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1854 and came west, settling in Northfield, Rice Co., MN where he was a surveyor. He was admitted to the bar in 1858 after studying with two former schoolmates, Bathelder & Buckham at Faribualt. In 1859 he came to Austin, Mower Co., MN and formed a law partnership with Ormanzo Allen. Was elected County Attorney in 1860 and served four years; was postmaster of Austin during 1864-1865; in 1868 purchased a farm four miles east of Brownsdale where he taught school, farmed. Moved into Brownsdale where he opened a law and real estate office with J.M. Weiser; In 1878 he returned to Austin and lived the remainder of his life. There he was Register of Deeds, Clerk of the Probate Court and Justice of the Peace for the first ward of Austin.
 
DIED: 27 November 1894, Austin, Mower Co., Minnesota
Survived by wife and four children: Mrs. Kitty A. Lee of Fort Scott, KS; Edith M. Shortt teacher at Princeton, MN; Jennie S. of West Superior Wisconsin; and Philip H. Shortt of Austin.
BURIED: Not known. Services were held at the Congreational Church, Rev. C.E. Wright officiating.
SPOUSE: Isabella Stowell, daughter of Hammond Stowell, native of Ohio who came to Mower County, Minnesota in 1868.
