As to Mary A. Shirley (1797-1897), the
wife of David Wise Daily, it is known that her
paternal grandparents were Michael Shirley who
was born about 1740 in Spain and Katie Franz who
was born in Paris, France in 1743. Mary's
grandparents were in Washington D.C. around
1760. Mary
was born near the Kentucky River above Boonsboro
at what is called Cubbard Rock. As a child,
with her family, she was in the fort with Daniel
Boone and was old enough to be able to relate
many interesting things connected with and
relative to Daniel Boone and the fort and she
reared her children and grandchildren on these
stories.

A
George Shirley who appears to be of this family,
but not Mary's brother - perhaps a cousin,
was located in the 1860 Federal Census for Clark
County, Indiana. Listed in the township of
Jeffersonville as a 43 year old cooper born in
Kentucky which would put his birth date around
1818. His personal property was valued at
$60, and his household included his wife Sarah
age 33 born in KY, and what appears to be his
daughter Martha who was born in Kentucky around
1843 and possibly his aunt, wife of one of his
father's brother George. She is listed as
Elizabeth Shirley, age 87 of Virginia, thus
putting her birth about 1773.
Interestingly
enough, included in this household is 47 year old
John Russell who was born in Kentucky about 1813
and what appears to be his son James Russell who
was born in Indiana about 1847.
Also listed in the
1860 and 1870 Clark County, Indiana Federal
Census was a Louis Shirley who was born in
Kentucky in about 1817, and is probably like
George, a cousin of Mary Shirley and possibly the
brother of George. Louis' wife Mary E. was
born in Kentucky around 1825 and their children
listed in the census records of 1860 and 1870
were: Sarah (1845), Joe W. (1850), James (1851),
Alice V. (1853), George (1856), and Davis
(1859) all born in Kentucky. Their younger
children - Luella (1861), Edward (1864), Louis
(1866), and Charles (Nov 1869) were all born in
Indiana. - Like George, Louis was a cooper
and lived in Jeffersonville in 1860 but by 1870
Louis was listed as a 53 year old city policeman
of Jeffersonville.
