Sabin of Rehoboth, MA

Ancestors & Descendants of Abigail Sabin
Daughter of Noah & Mary (Perrin); Wife of Samuel Wheat

In 1620, The Mayflower and its 102 passengers including 50 men, 19 women, 14 young adults, and 19 children. They were known as the Pilgrims, and were the Separatists who had fled England and broken away from the Church of England because of religious persectuion. They were initially a small group who first went to Holland in 1608 and settled in Leiden in 1610. They had left Leiden on The Speedwell and met up with a second ship, regrouped and set sail on The Mayflower on the 16th of September 1620. While on voyage across the Atlantic, one child, Oceanus Hopkins, was born; and after sighting Cape Cod but not having a legal right to settle there, another child, (Peregrine White) was born in the harbor. They afterwards moved on and located the Plymouth harbor and landed there on the 21st of December. The following day, Mary (Norris) Allerton, gave birth to a stillborn son while still anchored in the harbor.

This place of the Pilgrims was where the Sabin family came from England, but by 1685, the Old Plymouth Colony was divided into three counties: Plymouth, Bristol, and Barnstable. The county of Bristol would come to include the towns of Bristol; Dartmouth; Freetown; Little Compton; Rehoboth (orginally known as Seacunk or Sea Konk); Swansea; Taunton; and the plantations of Cumberland Gore and Attleboro.

When William Sabin, the Plymouth Colony immigrant, is not known, but he appears in the American colony by 1643 listed as one of the Original Proprietors of Rehoboth, giving his net worth for the purpose of obtaining future land grants and paying taxes. His "estate" of £53 was among the lowest on the list. It is believed that he was the same William who was baptised in Titchfield, Hampshire, England on 11 Oct 1609, his parents, Samuel and Mary (Bushe), were married in that parish on the 29th of October the previous year.

His first wife was Mary, daughter of Richard Wright, whom he married in Braintree in about 1639. Her father Richard built the mill in which William later operated and was the founder of Rehoboth. William and Mary had twelve children, the last ten of which were born in Rehoboth, a place meaning "a roomy place," in which the land therein was initially granted by the Plymouth Court to colonists from Hingham, and were soon joined by Mr. Samuel Newman "and the majority of his church at Weymouth." A list of fifty-eight names from the 1643 Proprietors' Records of fifty-eight land owners, included William Sabin among those listed at a Town Meeting on the 31st day of the fourth month (June) in 1644 whereas lots were drawn for a division of the woodland between the plain and the town.

William was a cultured man, who in 1648 was operating his father-in-law's mill, in 1656 was constable, and in the following years he was Deputy to the court at Plymouth. After his wife Mary's death, he married Martha (Allen) on 22 Dec 1663. Marthat was born 11 Dec 1641, and was the daughter of James and Anna - and twin of Mary. Two of her brothers married daughters of William by his first wife Mary (Wright): Joseph Allen who married Hannah Sabin on 10 Nov 1673 and Nathaniel who married Mary Sabin in April of 1674.

In the years that followed, William and Martha (Allen) had five children born to them before the hostilities between the settlers and the Indians occurred. In 1675 William was foreman of the jury which found three Indians guilty of killing John Sassaman. They believed they had done so because he had come to warn the colonists that Indian Chief had planned an uprising against the settlers, and although there were Indians among the jury, they were not given voting rights. The three Indians were hanged in June, and it incited what was to become known as King Phillip's War. The Indians raided and burned villages and massacred the English at Swansea. William's own son Nehemiah, was killed by the Indians in June of 1676, just a few months after William's mill had been burned in the hostilities in late March of that year.

William Sabin died on 8 Feb 1687 in Rehoboth and his will was probated in Boston on 17 July 1687. He was considered a cultured and wealthy man and had fathered twenty children before his death at the age of seventy-eight.
