GENERATION II
 
Ebenezer Root (Joshua) was born on 17 Dec 1760 in Great Barrington, Berkshire, MA. He came to New York before 1800 from Great Barrington, Mass., and settled in the east part of the town, five miles south-east of Oxford village, on the farm now occupied by Theodore Ingersoll. He was a miller, and in 1820, removed to Guilford and took charge of a grist-mill in that village. At an early day he was a drover and cattle dealer. He afterwards took charge of a grist-mill near Van Buren Corners, which was built by the Wescotts, to grind grain for their distillery. The mill is still standing, but has not been in operation for a good many years. He continued to operate the mill, which was run on shares, till his death in Guilford on 12 Feb 1842, at aged 82.

His first wife was Jerusha Dogister who was born in Massachusetts, and mother of his first seven children. His second wife was Cynthia Whipple, daughter of Daniel Whipple and Deborah (Hildreth). Cynthia was born in 1789 in Battleboro, Windham, Vermont and died on 15 Feb 1856 in Guilford, Chenango, New York.

Those of his children by his first wife who arrived at maturity, went west except Eben, who had gone to Leavenworth, Kansas. Ebenezer died on 12 Feb 1842 , Chenango, New York.

  2. Charlotte Root - born on 5 Jul 1805 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. She died on 26 Oct 1900. Married (1) Ira Dibble; and married (2) Charles Godfrey.
  3. Polly Root - born on 16 Apr 1807 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. She married Willis Gridley who was born in Caton, Steuben Co., New York.
  4. Daniel W. Root - born on 29 May 1809 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. He died in Ohio.
  5. Harriet Root - born on 27 Aug 1811 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. She died on 26 Oct 1901 in Guilford, Chenango, New York. She married John Young and was living with Daniel Johnson and his wife in in 1898 - she was considered intelligent, well informed , and a lady held in high esteem by her acquaintances.
  6. Alanson Root - born on 19 Nov 1814 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. He died in 1817 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY.
  7. Silas Root - born on 10 Feb 1817 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. Twin of Cyrus, he died on 1 Apr 1904.
  8. Cyrus Root - born on 10 Feb 1817 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. He died in Yazoo, Mississippi. Twin of Silas.
 
GENERATION III
Jerusha Root (Ebenezer, Joshua) was born on 22 Feb 1804 in Chenango Co., New York. She married Seth M. Johnson, son of Daniel Johnson and Mary (Norton). Seth was born 4 Oct 1802 in Guilford, and was counted in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census in Guilford, Chenango Co., New York.

Seth died on 16 Jun 1865, and he was buried in West Bainbridge, Chenango, New York and in 1880 Jerusha was residing in Guilford with her son Daniel's family. She died on 8 Jul 1889 in Chenango Co., New York and was also buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery. Chenango, New York.

  1. Hiram Titus Johnson - born in May 1829 in Guilford, Chenango, NY. He died on 23 Dec 1852 in Oregon City, Clackamas, Oregon but was buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery, New York. Cemetery Notes: "He sought that distant land for his home, But found there his grave."
  2. Frances Lucia Johnson - born about 1831 in Chenango, NY; married Thomas Fleming, a farmer of Schuyler Co., New York.
  3. Daniel Johnson - born on 21 Apr 1833. He died in 1915.
  4. Charles Johnson - born about 1835 in Chenango, NY; was a shoe merchant of Pueblo, New Mexico.
  5. Ellen A. Johnson - born about 1837 in Guilford, Chenango, NY. She died on 17 Jul 1853 in Guilford, and was buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery, NY.
  6. Robert L. Johnson - born about 1839 in Guilford, Chenango, NY. He served in the military Co. L, 20th NY Cavalry as a Lieut. in 1864. He died at the Soldier's Lodge on 18 Nov 1864 in Portsmouth, Virginia and was buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery where his marker indicates he was a Civil War Veteran.

  8. Esther Johnson - born about 1844 in Chenango, NY. She was enumerated in the 1850 and 1860 census residing in Guilford, Chenango, NY. She married A.O. Sherherd of Brooklyn, New York.
  9. Sarah Johnson - born on 19 Nov 1847 in Guilford, Chenango, NY; married John H. Brower of Chicago, Illinois.
 
Silas Root (Ebenezer, Joshua) was born on 10 Feb 1817 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. He was the twin of Cyrus and married Matilda (Cole) who was born in New York in about 1824. They were enumerated in the 1860 census residing in Guilford. Silas died on 1 Apr 1904.

Daniel Johnson (Jerusha Root, Ebenezer, Joshua) was born on 21 Apr 1833 in Bainbridge, Chenango, NY. He married Mary A. Hale about 1856 in Guilford, Chenango, NY. Mary was born on 30 Jul 1833 in New York, died on 13 Oct 1884 and was buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery, Chenango, NY.

Daniel was counted in a census in 1840 and 1850 in Guilford, Chenango, NY. He was then enumerated as head of household in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records where he continued to reside in Guilford. He was a prominent dairyman and stock raiser of Chenango County. He died in 1915 and was buried in West Bainbridge, Chenango, New York.
