William's mother
Fanny Riley, was according to census records,
born in Ireland in about 1834. A search for
some of the Rileys in Clark County, located a few
families. The eldest Riley found, however,
was born in Kentucky in 1809 and therefore does
not appear to be of Fanny's immediate
family. Also a Henry Riley born in Germany
in 1810 who was married to an Anna K. and had a
daughter Lenora; and a John Riley born in Indiana
in 1821. The first Riley located in the
records that was born in Ireland, was Cornelius
Riley who was born there in about 1828. He
was listed as head of household in the 1870
census taken the 18th of July, and was living
with his family in Jeffersonville a few houses
down from John Weir and his wife Margaret.
Listed as a 42 year-old laborer born in Ireland
to parents of foreign birth; and listed with him
was an Ann, possibly his mother aged 80, who was
also born in Ireland.
There was also
listed in the 1860/1870 census a Patrick Riley
who was born in Ireland in about 1835. He
was listed in Jeffersonville Twp in July of 1860
as 24 years of age; and in the 1870 census of
Jeffersonville, as a 35 year-old clerk with real
estate valued at $1,500 and personal estate
valued at $200. He was listed as a U.S.
citizen born in Ireland to parents of foreign
birth. Listed in his household was his wife
Mary age 35 - also born in Ireland to parents of
foreign birth; daughter Catherine age 6 born in
KY; daughter Mary Ann age 4 born in IN; and son
Thomas age two born in Indiana.
