| Having initially thought Belle was
the daughter of James Rintoul and Elizabeth
(Rich) and granddaughter of Stephen A. and Jane
Oliver, we recently received an email from Chuck
Hamaker that clarified that Isabelle Rintoul had
married John B. Knapp. Census records from 1880
through 1930 confirm this. Therefore this
Isabella was neither Davenport by birth or
marriage. According
to the census records in 1860 James Rintoul was listed
as an accountant born in Scotland in about 1817
but was later listed as a railroad auditor.
Besides Elizabeth, the household included Stephen
who was born about 1845 and was later a
provisions broker; Mary E. who was born about
1847, John who was born about 1850 and was later
listed as an ale brewer, and Isabelle, the
youngest.
As noted, this
Isabelle married John B. Knapp in New York City
on 13 Nov 1879, he having been born in Tennessee
on 01 May 1875 but by 1880 was living in New York
City where he was listed as a physician. During
the 1900 census, Isabelle's mother
Elizabeth (Rich) Rintoul was listed in their
household as aged 76, widowed and mother of seven
children, four of which were living. Sometime
after 1910 John Knapp died and in 1920 Isabelle
was listed as head of household in Los Angeles
Co., California. According to the California
Death Index, Isabelle died 27 Oct 1940.
Coincidently,
another Isabelle was residing in California at
the same time. She was born Isabelle Rintoul
Davenport on 04 Mar 1879 and was the daughter of
John Sidney Davenport a lawyer, and his wife Mary
Elizabeth (Rintoul) - daughter of James Rintoul,
a railroad auditor and Elizabeth Rich. Listed
with her family as age one in 1880 residing in New York City.
In 1900 Isabelle's family was
located in the census for Richmond county, living
in the city of New York (Staten Island) where her
father, John Davenport, continued to practice
law. In about 1905 Isabelle married Fowler
Shankland, and in 1910 - 1920 they were living in Los
Angeles Co., California where she remained until
her death which occurred on 21 Aug 1969.
Considering the
Bogardus stamp on the back of Belle's photograph,
it seems that the Isabella born in 1879 was born
later than the time in which Bogardus had his
studio at this location - which leaves us still
contemplating the identification of beautiful
Belle. It seems clear, however, that Isabella
(born 1879) and Hannah (Rich) Peters were cousins
- Isabella's great grandfather Stephen A. Rich
was the brother of Hannah's father James Rich.
