Flag of NDNORTH DAKOTA

In Brief: The early settlers of North Dakota generally came from Norway, Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, and Iowa. Important but smaller groups came from Germany, England, Irleand, Sweden, Russia, and the older midwestern states of Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Many of the Canadian immigrants were of Scottish descent, and most from Russia were of German origin. By time North Dakota became a state, seventy percent of its population were either foreign born or children of foreign born parents.

The first permanent white settlement in the area which is now North Dakota, was settled by Scottish pioneers from Canada at Pembina. Free land was offered in 1863 under the first Homestead Act, but Civil War and conflicts with the Indians delayed settlement. In 1889 the Dakota Territory was divided and both North and South Dakota were admitted to the Union.
