Charles Oscar Pilcher,
the son of Robert James Pilcher and his wife
Rebecca Comfort (Williams), was born in
Fayette County, Illinois on the 2nd day of
February in 1851.The Pilcher family from which he
descends, was from Culpeper County, Virginia.
The grandfather, Winslow Pilcher had been
born there on 10 Jan 1794 and married
Averilla Gatewood in Henry Co., Kentucky on
18 Dec 1820. They had a very large family
consisting of nineteen children of which one
son, Benjamin Charles Pilcher, wrote of to
the Moore family in a letter dated about
1896.
Winslow and
Averilla's fifth child and last to be born in
Kentucky, was Robert James Pilcher who was
born 22 Aug 1826 in Frankfort. The family
moved to Fayette County, Illinois a short
time later and the grandparents continued to
reside there until their death. A cemetery,
known as the Winslow
Pilcher Cemetery, has many of the family laid to
rest there.
While
continuing to reside there, Robert married
Rebecca Comfort Williams, the daughter of
Josiah and Comfort. She was born in Ohio on
25 February 1827 and died on 20 March 1878 in
Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. They family
had moved there sometime after 1861 and
before 1870 when they were enumerated in 1870 residing in Plymouth.
In 1880
widower Robert J. Pilcher was living in
Bourbon Township with his three younger
children. He retuned to Illinois where he
married Mary Jane Bovard on 23 November 1881.
They had no children, but Mary had a daughter
by her previous marriage named Fannie J.
Bovard who married Ellet M. Pilcher, the son
of Robert and his first wife Rebecca. Robert
J. Pilcher died 11 May 1911 in Villa Grove,
Douglas Co., Illinois.
Robert and
Rebecca were the parents of Florence who
married Josiah Jacoby, Charles Oscar
(pictured), Clarence Otis who married Mary F.
Swoverland, and twins Ellet M. and Ella M.
Pilcher who were born in 1861.
Charles Oscar
Pilcher married Lavina Gipe, the daughter of
Samuel and Martha. They were the parents of
Roscoe who later lived in New York, Ethel who
married Dr. Karl Sleeper and resided in
California, and daughter Estelle who was the
wife of Harry H. Hinde, residents of
Riverside, California.
Charles passed
away in 1894 and his widow Lavina remarried
and also relocated to California where she
died in Los Angeles on the 16th of November
1920.
