Ezekiel Pilcher - was born 04 Jan 1800 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky.  He removed to Springfield in about 1824 and married on 8 May 1825 Louisa Ballard who was born 28 Feb 1809 in Grayson County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Christopher Anthony Ballard and Eleanor Mossman.

Ezekiel and Louisa were enumerated in the 1840 and 1850 census records.  Family notes indicate that his wife Louisa was a staunch friend of Mrs. Abraham Lincoln and that Ezekiel, who was a carpenter, had made some of Abe's furniture and that their youngest daughter Clarissa born in 1845 sat on Abe's lap. - A close look at the census record indicates that though the Pilchers didn't live next door to the Lincolns, they had close friends and relations - the Kalbs, Van Bergens, and Watsons who lived only a few doors down from the Lincolns.

After Ezekiel's death on 16 Dec in Woodburn, Macoupin County, Illinois, the family moved to St. Louis where Louisa was listed in the 1860 as head of house, with sons Montgomery age 27, Alexander 19, and Edward 17; and daughters Elinor (twin of Edward) age 17, and Clarissa fourteen years of age.

In 1870 she was listed in the household of her daughter, Ellenor, wife of John K. Burden. She died in St. Louis on 22 Dec 1872 at the age of sixty-four and was laid to rest at St. Peter's Cemetery.

Although no family records have surfaced indicating that Jeptha married a second time after his wife's death in 1854, it seems likely she died not long after daughter Sarah was born and that daughter Cora Lee was the daughter of his second wife, though she died in 1866.

The 1880 census for Chandlersville lists Jeptha, age 71 of Kentucky who is a dry goods merchant with a family that includes: wife Catherine age 51 of VA; daughter Effie age 16 born in IL; son Elbert or Albert age 13 born in IL; and son Jeptha age 11 born in Illinois.
