Born in Stamford, Delaware
county, New York on the 13th of March, Richard
was the son of Richard and Susannah (Halstead).
He married Mary "Polly" Wilcox on the
26th of January in 1820 and in about 1824 removed
his family from Harpersfield, NY to what became
Summerfield Twp., in Monroe county, MI where he
has purchased about 600 acres of land from the
government.
In
1834, he deeded some of the property to railroad
investors who platted a village of 41 blocks and
named it Petersburg after him.
Richard
passed away in Petersburg on the 5th of March
1862, survived by his second wife, Orissa Baker
whom he had married in January of 1837.
