Amy Peters
(James, Richard) was born on 10 Nov 1795 in
Halfmoon, Saratoga, New York. She married (1)
Adam J. Plank in 1816. Adam was born on 27 Nov
1796 in Montgomery Co., NY and died on 25 Sep
1825 in Montgomery Co., NY. He was the son of
Jacob Plank and Catharina (Weber), and the
grandson of Adam Plank, a Revolutionary War
soldier) and his wife Catherine (Clyne). Amy died
26 Nov 1852 in Fords Bush, New York.
Amy married (2)
Peter Davis in 1842 in New York. Peter was born
about 1785 in New York, and was counted in a
census in 1850 in Minden, Montgomery, NY.
RESEARCHER
NOTES: According to Tracy Marcello,
"Establishing that Amy Plank's maiden as
Peters was done through mostly circumstantial
information in deed records. In 1825, Adam J.
Plank bought property from James Peters and wife.
When Adam J. died, the Fulton Co. NY property he
inherited from his father went back to his mother
and the property he bought from the Peters went
to Amy. In later years, Amy and the Peters
exchange land several times. In July 1842, in
Fulton Co., Amy Plank was the grantor of a deed
to James Peters. In August 1842, Peter Davis and
wife were grantors in a deed to James Plank. This
made me suspect that Amy had remarried Peter
Davis and in the 1850 census, I found Peter Davis
of Minden, Montgomery County, New York with an
Amy who was the correct age.
Adam J. Plank was
baptized on January 22, 1797 at the German
Reformed Church of Stone Arabia, New York. The
baptism record gives his birth date as December
16, 1796; slightly different from the calculated
date from the age on his gravestone. The sponsors
at his baptism were Johannes Dachstaeder (John
Dockstader) and his wife Barba (Barbara). The
baptism records for this church, indicate
Barbara's maiden name was Weber - perhaps she's
the sister of Adam's mother Catharine.
Correspondence
with a descendent of James Peters (named Ellen
VanBlaircom) confirmed that Amy was the daughter
of James Peters and that she first married Adam
Plank and later married Peter Davis. (Ellen has
notes written by her aunt, Nell Rhodes McCoy
1883-1965, that specifically state Amy Peters was
first married to Adam Plank and later to Peter
Davis of Ford's Bush (present-day Minden)
Montgomery Co., New York.
Note: Montgomery
County became Fulton Co. in 1838.

Richard Peters [ PHOTO ] (Richard, Richard) was born on 13 Mar
1797 in Stamford, Delaware, NY. He married there
(1) Mary Polly (Wilcox) on 26 Jan 1820, she was
born in 1798 in New York, her parentage is still
unknown.
Richard Peters left
Harpersfield, NY in about 1820 or a little later,
coming about the same time as John Wadsworth,
Elihu Ward, and Benjamin Davis; and has been
speculated that they may have come by way of the
newly opened Erie canal to Buffalo, then to
Monroe and perhaps went upriver by a pole boat.
Richard then purchased from the US Government
about 600 acres of land which he partially
cleared and then built a crude cabin before
returning to gather up his family.
Leaving New York
behind them, Richard and his small family
traveled by ox wagon until they reached New York
City, and then boarded a barge on the Erie Canal
which took them to Buffalo where they transferred
to a lake schooner at Buffalo and proceeded
onward to La Plaisance Bay where the family then
piled their belongings onto flatboats, finally
arriving at the cabin home Richard had built
directly opposite of the old depot building.
Not long after the
family was settled in, Richard along with Wells
and Hart, made a boat by felling a huge
whitewood, about 20 feet long which they hallowed
out for the purpose of ferrying passengers across
the river. He then consrtucted a tavern in which
lodgers and mail riders could rest and change
horses; and not long after this, bought about
twenty head of young cattle from an Ohio man for
$70.00.
In March of 1826,
Richard's wife gave birth to a son, Charles,
whose birth was attended by an Indian squaw, most
likely a relation to Sub-Chief Jarco who was a
near neighbor of theirs. Because Richard was in
such good standing with the Indians, he was
dubbed by them "White Chief Peters,"
and often traded with them - supplying the Peters
with fresh meat and generous supplies of maple
syrup and in turn, Polly often sent large loaves
of baked bread to Jarco.
Richard's wife Polly
died on the 26th of January 1831 at the age of
36. In 1834 he deeded some of his property to the
railroad investors who platted a village of 41
blocks and named it Petersburg after him. He was
the first postmaster of the village of Petersburg
and held the office from 1826-1845.
In January of 1837
Richard married (2) Orissa (Baker) . Orissa was
born about 1810 in New York. Both were counted in
the 1850 and 1860 census for Monroe Co., MI living in the
township of Summerfield. Richard died 05 Mar 1862
in Petersburg, and was buried in Petersburg
Cemetery. [OBITUARY ]
After the death of
her husband, Orissa sold the family farm and
departed the community with her only child,
Emeline Peters who was born about 1838 in Monroe
Co., Michigan and was listed as age 12 in the
1850 Monroe Co., MI census with Richard and
Orissa, and listed as Emma Merritt in her
parents; 1860 household. A death record indicates
she was widowed at the time of her death on 13
Jan 1907 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co.,
Michigan.
