"The church, built in 1767, replaced earlier places of Christian worship dating back to the 12th century. Outside stairways lead inside to the old family galleries of Catlemilk, Dripps and Cathkin. The gatehouse, dating from 1820, accommodated the watch against grave robbers."

Gilmour Family Headstones

Outside, in the village churchyard are believed to be the burials of our Scotland ancestors - Arbuckle and Gilmour.
No stones were found by Ruthanne Rocha of the Arbuckle family, but is most likely that the stones may have been too faded, worn or broken.

The Gilmour Family:
James Gilmour married Margaret Arbuckle, daughter of John and Mary (Young). They were united in marriage on 28 May 1803 in Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland, she having been christened on 11 Jan 1776.

They were the parents of Mary who was born 22 Mar 1804 and died young: John who was born 25 Aug 1805 and married Isabella Fleming in 1832; James who was born 16 Feb 1808 and married (1) Anne Haggart in 1832 and (2) Elisabeth Pettiegrew in 1836; Mary who was born 31 Oct 1810 and married John Murray in 1833; and Agnes who was born 17 Nov 1813 and married Hugh Paterson in 1836.

William Gilmour (1802-1849) Family Headstone
WILLIAM GILMOUR FAMILY HEADSTONE

Although most of the stones are difficult, if not impossible to read, a few can be made out such as the one pictured above and photographed by Ruthanne Rocha on her visit to Scotland in 2006.

This beautiful old headstone states the following: "Erected by William Gilmour, Wood Merchant Glasgow, In Memory of, Mary McGhie, his wife who, died 29th June 1836 aged 39 years. Matthew Gilmour his son, died 10th Sept. 1842 age 14 years. The above, William Gilmour died 25 Jany 1849 age 47 years; Margaret Young his daughter, died 14 Feby 1869 age 36 years, and, John McGhie his son, died 30th Apr 1872 age 41 years.

According to the Old Parochial Records of Scotland, William Gilmour married Mary McGhie in Carmunnock on 28 Mar 1826. This marriage was also recorded in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland as 19 Mar 1826, which indicates that his wife might have been of this town.

William was born 21 Apr 1802 and was the son of Matthew Gilmour and Elizabeth (Pettigrew). He and Mary (McGhie) were the parents of Matthew who was born in 1828; John McGhie who was born in 1831 and Margaret Young Gilmour who was born in 1833. Each of their deaths are as recorded upon the headstone.

Matthew Gilmour (1767-1832) Family Headstone
MATTHEW GILMOUR FAMILY HEADSTONE

Although extremely worn and very difficult to read, the last name of the headstone reads "Pettigrew Gilmour" who was the son of Matthew. Pettigrew was born in Carmunnock on 22 Jun 1814 and christened that year on the 10th of July. As noted, he was aged 28 at the time of his death.

His parents, Matthew and Elizabeth (Pettigrew) were married in Carmunnock on 26 Jul 1793 and were the parents of eight other children: John who was born in 1796 and married Janet McKinnon; Matthew born in 1798; Robert born in 1800; William (mentioned above) born in 1802 who married Mary McGhie; Janet born 1804 who married Thomas Nelson; James born 1806 who married Elizabeth Pettigrew; Alexander born 1807; and Agnes who was born in 1816 and was the wife of Samuel Naesmith.

Annie S. (Gilmour) & Wm Macaulay Headstone
ANNIE S. (GILMOUR) & WILLIAM MACAULAY HEADSTONE

Although difficult to read, it is believed this stone is inscribed as follows: "In Loving Memory of Annie S. Gilmour, wife of William Macaulay, Cathkin, who died 04 Feb 1907, aged 31 years; William Macaulay died 15 Nov 1939, aged 75 years; also his wife Elizabeth Pettigrew Gilmour, who died 25 May 1946, aged 79 years."

It is believed that Annie S. Gilmour, who was born about 1876, was the first wife of William Macaulay and Elizabeth Pettigrew Gilmour, who was born about 1871, was his second wife.
