Overman

A Note From Patti: This information has been compiled from correspondence over the years between myself, David James, Renee Hill, Wayne Daily, and more recently Jeff Harmon. It is my hope that although not all individuals have been traced, that it will offer leads for others to locate those elusive ancestors. To further assist with other leads, I've included some sources as well as names of researchers at the bottom of the page including Jeff Harmon's very well-cited "Descendants of William F. Harmon" website. I welcome any additions, comments or corrections. Thanks! -pdp

Of Dutch stock, the Overman family came from North Carolina and were early settlers in Clark Co., Indiana. This sketch mostly follows the descendants of Joseph who was born in Guilford, North Carolina in about 1780 and was married to Jane (Covert) who was born in Monmouth Co., New Jersey in 1783.

The couple is believed to have had the following ten children, including two daughters and one son who married into the Daily family.

THOMAS OVERMAN - son of James Overman and Jane (Covert) was born about 1807 and married Mary "Polly" Cortner in Clark Co., Indiana on 12 Jan 1831. Enumerated in the 1850 census residing in Charlestown Twp., he was living next to Robert Clapp and the John Amick families. The daughter of John M. Cortner and Barbara (Low), Polly was born in Indiana on 24 May 1812 and died before 1860. It is believed Thomas Overman then married Bethia Polks in Douglas Co., Illinois in Sep 1860, but no further record of them. Their son Daniel, aged eleven may be living in Camargo, Douglas Co., Illinois in the household of William Cassell, and son James in the household of Francis and Martha Hessler in 1860. Nothing further of this family is known.

  2. Martha Overman - born about 1838 in Clark Co., Indiana; may have married Harrison Staley and resided in Hancock Co., Indiana and later Jasper Co., Illinois.

The household included her mother Jane (Covert) who was believed to have been born in Monmouth Co., New Jersey in 1783 and died in Clark County, IN the same year the census was taken.

Ann died in Clark Co., Indiana on 24 Oct 1853 and was laid to rest in New Market Presbyterian Cemetery. Her widowed husband appears to be listed in the 1860 census with a second wife Mary J. age 38, and children Louisa, Mary E., and John W. residing in New Market, Oregon Twp., Clark Co., Indiana. It should be noted, however, that no children were listed in the 1850 census with David and children may have been Mary's from a previous marriage.

In 1870 his household included his wife Mary J., son John W., and daughter Louisa who was at this time married to Moses J. Shelton. The 1880 census indicates David's parents were both born in Pennsylvania and Mary's in North Carolina. Their household consisted of David, Mary J., granddaughter Emma J. Shelton, son John Baldwin and his wife Jane.

Nothing has yet surfaced to indicate a marriage for Rachel prior to 1846. The family was listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census residing in New Market, Oregon Twp. Thomas suffered from rheumatism as noted in the last census as well as his obituary. He died on 07 Apr 1885 and Rachel on 12 Mar 1889.

He married Mary Ann Campbell on 21 Sep 1836 and is believed to have five children from this marriage, the youngest Sarah, having been born about 1847. In 1850 Samuel was enumerated with his 2nd wife Hannah M. Harris, so speculated that Mary Ann died prior to this.

His 2nd wife Hannah was born in Indiana in about 1827 and married him on 15 Aug 1850 in Jackson Co., Indiana. In 1860, Samuel, Hannah, and their children were residing in Camargo, Douglas Co., Illinois where he was listed as a carpenter. Three of the children from his first marriage remained in Clark Co., Indiana and in 1860 were listed with their maternal grandmother, Mary, widow of Joseph B. Campbell.

In 1870 the family had moved less than twenty miles northwest, but were then in Champaign Co., Illinois residing in Crittenden Twp. The family included Samuel, Hannah, and all their children except for Thomas. Ten years later, the family appears back in the Village of Camargo. The 1880 lists Samuel as a Miller living on Main Street with his wife Hannah, four sons and daughter Laura, the latter being a school teacher.

In 1900 he and Hannah along with their youngest song were living in the household of their son John in Mitchell Co., Kansas. Samuel died that same year on 03 Jun 1900 and is said to have been laid to rest at Oakridge Cemetery in Camargo.

According to the census and years of the children's birth, it appears John died sometime between 1854 and 1860 - his death probably occurred in Illinois as Susan is listed as head of household in 1860. On 29 Dec 1845, he married Mary Daily, also of Clark Co., Indiana. She was born on 16 May 1819, and was the daughter of Charles Daily and Katherine (Stoner). The were first enumerated as a family in 1850 census residing in Charlestown Twp., James listed as age 25 and living near the Thomas Daily and Rachel (Overman) family.Their household included three of the four children that would be born to them, the youngest, Sarah, being but six months old.

The family was enumerated in the 1860 census residing in Henryville, Monroe Twp., Clark Co., Indiana - their household consisting of two young sons. GIDEON AMICK - son of Sarah (Overman) and Levi Amick, was born 29 Aug 1831 in Indiana. Shortly after his twenty-first birthday he married Lydia Daily on 11 Sep 1852. Lydia was the daughter of Charles Daily and Katherine (Stoner), and was born in 1836. The couple was enumerated with their two young children in the 1860 census residing in Aspinwall, Nemaha Co., Nebraska where her sister Mary, wife of James Overman, was also living.

By 1870 Gideon is widowed and living in Benton Twp., Atchison Co., Missouri not far from Mary and James Overman. Gideon and Lydia's youngest daughter is aged eight, so Lydia died sometime between about 1862 and 1870. It is unknown how Gideon met his second wife, Ann Sipe, whom he married in Butler Co., Pennsylvania, but it is speculated that he might have had family there. The information on Ann in the 1880 census in Adair Co., Missouri matches the information from the 1870 census of Clearfield Twp., Butler Co., Pennsylvania in which she is listed as living with her parents John and Margaret (Stephens) in that place - aged forty years. The History of Butler County indicates that her father John had come from Buffalo Twp., Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania to Butler county in 1838.

In 1900 Gideon and Ann are listed by themselves in Nineveh Twp., Adair Co., Missouri - and the census indicates she had not had any children, further supporting the 1870 census information in which she was living with her parents. Gideon is noted as having died 28 Feb 1902 in Kirksville, Adair Co., Missouri, and it is believed that Ann died there on 15 Aug 1909. They were both laid to rest in Novinger Cemetery in Adair county.

DEBORAH OVERMAN - born on 06 Mar 1840 or 1841 in Indiana, and speculated to be the daughter of Rachel Overman prior to her marriage to Thomas H. Daily. Although she was enumerated as a Daily in 1850, other records including her marriage to Andrew Fisher on 03 Sep 1857 indicate she was an Overman and not a biological daughter of Thomas H. Daily.

In 1860, she and Andrew were living in Rockport, Clay Twp., Atchison Co., Missouri with their ten month-old son William, but in 1870 the family had returned to Clark Co., Indiana where they were residing in Utica Township.

The mother of four sons, Deborah died 23 Nov 1873, and on 18 Apr 1875 Andrew married Mrs. Elizabeth Maria Campbell in Henderson Co., Kentucky. He died less than two years later on 01 Apr 1877.

Nothing further is known about Andrew's ancestry. If you have more information please contact me or Joan Ausnow who is a direct descendant of Andrew.

Nancy was born in Indiana in August of 1870 and was the daughter of John who was born in Illinois in July of 1846. In 1900 William and Nancy are living in Robb Twp. of that county with their daughter Cora M. who was born in June of 1889, and her father John. In 1910 their household situated on Main street in Bethel Twp. consisted of themselves, daughter Cora, Nancy's brother William and two boarders. 1. William Sherman Kern - born 17 May 1868 in Indiana. He married Emma "Jane" Amick in Posey Co., Indiana on 24 Jul 1887, she having been born in Indiana in February of 1869. They were located in the 1900 census records in Wabash Twp., Gibson Co., Indiana with their five children. William died in 1953 and Jane in 1957, and are said to have been buried in Bethsadia Cemetery, Posey Co., Indiana.
  2. Frank E. Kern - born in March 1869 in Clark Co., Indiana.

JAMES DAILY - son of Rachel (Overman) and Thomas Hardin Daily, was born in Clark Co., Indiana. The 1860 census lists his age as nine, but his burial information states he was born in 1853. The census appears consistent as he is enumerated in 1870 as age nineteen while continuing to reside with his parents.

He was married to Grace Varble on 09 Jul 1879, she being the daughter of William Varble and Sarah (Righthouse). She is believed to have been the fifth child of eleven, and was born in Indiana in 1859. At the time of the 1880 census they were residing in Oregon Twp., Clark Co., Indiana with their two young children.

James and Grace were not located in the census records after 1880, but it is believed that James died in 1919 in Scott Co., Indiana. His widow and his son Henry died in a tragic auto accident when their car was struck by a train on the way home from doing last minute Christmas shopping on 25 Dec 1928. According to her obituary, Grace had three sons and two daughters who survived her. She and James were laid to rest at Split Stump Cemetery in Scott Co., Indiana.

PATRICK OVERMAN - son of Samuel C. Overman and Mary Ann (Campbell), was born 19 Jun 1839 in Clark Co., IN. He married Nancy J. (Coker) in 1861, she having been born in Callaway Co., Kentucky in March of 1838. Her parents were Isaac Coker, a Baptist minister, as indicated by the 1860 census, and his wife Jane (Furches) of Rowan, North Carolina.

Patrick served in the 59th Regiment, Indiana Infantry during the Civil War and by 1870 was residing in Scott Co., Indiana with their three small children. By 1880 the family has grown to include three sons and three daughters, and Patrick is listed as partially blind. In 1900 their household has dwindled back down to the two of them, but their son Charles is living next door with his wife and baby daughter. Patrick died in Scott Co., Indiana on 15 Sep 1913 and his widow on 26 May 1930. Both are said to have been buried in Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Leota, Scott Co., Indiana.

Her mother died when she was about six years old and when his father married Hannah Harris, the children from his first marriage seemed to have stayed with their maternal grandmother, Mary Campbell. In 1860 Ellen is not listed in her father's household in Camargo, Illinois nor in her grandmother's household, but may be the same Ellen Overman who is listed as age 19 residing in the John Boyer household in Charlestown working as a domestic.

She married James Mitchell on 05 Mar 1861 who may have served and died in the Civil War. It's possible he was the James Mitchell located in the 1860 census residing in Henryville, Monroe Twp., born about 1838 and working as a carpenter in the household of James and Mary Ryan. Nothing further is known of James Mitchell, but on 21 Dec 1865 Ellen married Elliott Enlow, a grocer, who was born 15 May 1837 in Clark Co., Indiana. They appeared in the 1870 census with one son Charles, and in 1880 with three sons although they appear to have other children who died in their infancy (Fannie & Joseph, Gideon, Jesse).

Ellen died on 13 Dec 1891 and is believed to be buried in St. Clair Cemetery in Henryville, Clark Co., Indiana. On 05 Jan 1893 he married the widow Ellen (Howell) who was then listed with him in the 1900 in East Finley Twp., Washington Co., PA and in 1910 residing in Claysville Borough, Washington Co., PA census records. SARAH MALVINA OVERMAN - daughter of Samuel C. Overman and Mary Ann (Campbell), was born 20 Jun 1846 in Clark Co., Indiana. On 27 Jun 1872 she married George W. Koons, the son of George and Mary. In 1880 the family was enumerated in Union Twp., Clark Co., Indiana and George was working for the railroad. Their family included daughters Lola, Mary and son Walter (who was listed as a daughter). In 1900 the family is residing in Charlestown Twp., and though no occupation is listed for George, it is believed he continued to work for the railroad. This census also lists Sarah as a seamstress and mother of eight children, one having passed - this being her first child George who died in his infancy.

In 1910 daughter Lola and son Walter are both living at home, he working as a sewing machine repairman and she as a seamstress. By 1920 George and his daughter Lola are the only ones residing in the home. His wife died on 19 Jan 1918 and George on 20 Aug 1924, both deaths occurring in Charlestown, Indiana.

GEORGE W. OVERMAN - son of Samuel Overman and Hannah M. (Harris), was born 19 Jun 1857 in Illinois and was listed as age three in the 1860 census residing in Douglas Co., Illinois where his father worked as a carpenter. By 1870 the family was living in Crittenden Twp., Champaign Co., Illinois, but had moved back to Camargo by 1880 where his father was then working as a miller. He was listed in the 1900 and 1910 census residing in Tuscola Twp. and died on 17 Apr 1935 and his wife on 28 Aug 1926.

George married Elizabeth F. Wyatt on 21 Aug 1881 in Douglas Co., Illinois. She was the daughter of Thomas and Cascinda (Smith) and was born in Kentucky 29 Aug 1858. According to a biographical sketch of Douglas Co., Illinois, the family had come to Illinois in 1865 from Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky. Census records confirm their residence there in 1850 and 1860, the latter listing Elizabeth as one year of age and the former showing Cascinda in the household of Peter and Jane Smith, Peter being her mother's 2nd husband and brother of her first husband Moses who died about 1840.

In 1870 & 1880 the Thomas Wyatt family was living in Douglas Co., Illinois and by 1900 Thomas appears to have remarried a woman by the name of Anna and had by her a daughter named Lulu who was born in January of 1897.

CHILDREN OF
GEORGE W. OVERMAN & ELIZABETH F. (WYATT)
  1. Thomas Samuel Overman - born 16 Oct 1884 in Camargo Twp., Douglas Co., IL; married Minnie Alice Teeter on 10 Dec 1905, daughter of Calvin A. Teeter and Amanda (Oswald); died 1959 in Grosse Point, Michigan.

MAHALA C. OVERMAN - daughter of Joseph Overman & Elizabeth Jane (Haymaker), was born about April of 1846 in Clark Co., Indiana and at about age twenty, married Daniel W. Bottorff. The son of Jacob and Bathsheba (Coble), he was born in or about March of 1839 and prior to his marriage, was listed with his widowed mother Bethsheba and his younger brother Silas in 1860 residing in Charlestown.

In 1870 the two were listed in Oregon Twp., and Daniel was working as a wagon maker. Sometime before 1880 the family had moved to Missouri where they were living with their five year-old adopted daughter Maude in the Village of New Home in Bates county. Also residing with them in that household was Mahala's brother Joseph, and her parents were in nearby Howard township. By 1900 the family had moved to Otter Creek Twp., Greenwood Co., Kansas and their daughter had married Jacob Lewis Steward and was living next door to her parents with four children. Also living next to Maud and Jacob were his parents, Hiram and Delilah (Brothers) Steward, of Delware Co., Ohio.

In 1910 Mahala is living alone in Otter Creek and is listed as age sixty-two and widowed. Her daughter and family had then moved to Kootenai Co., Idaho and were there ten years later, so it can be assumed that Mahala died before 1920 and her husband Daniel before 1910 - presumably in Kansas.

CHILDREN OF
MAHALA C. (OVERMAN) & DANIEL W. BOTTORFF
  1. Maude E. Bottorff - born about Oct 1875 in Indiana and listed as adopted in the 1880 census. She married Jacob Lewis Steward in about 1891. Jacob was the son of Hiram and his 2nd wife Delilah (Brothers), and was born in Iowa. They were the parents of five children - four daughters and one son. Maude later married Dennis Frost of Michigan.

SILAS B. OVERMAN - son of Joseph Overman & Elizabeth Jane (Haymaker), was born in May of 1852 in Clark Co., Indiana. He removed with his parents to Grand River Twp., Carroll Co., Missouri where he was enumerated in their household in 1870. On 29 Feb 1880 Silas married and was living in the household of his in-laws, Francis A. and Lavina Elliott of Kentucky. A search for his wife indicates she is probably Brunette Frances Elliott, born about 1862. Census records for Kentucky locate a William Elliott in Lewis Co., Kentucky who was born about 1820 in Ohio, married with wife Nancy and had a four year-old daughter Brunette in 1850, and in 1860 listed as age 14, so quite possibly the grandparents of Silas' wife Frances but not researched further and that information remains purely speculation.

Sometime between 1892 and 1894 the family moved to Missouri where In 1900 Silas is listed as widowed residing in Bates county with sons Benny, Newton, and Robert. Silas is not located in the census records after this date, however, his son Ben was living in Belknap Twp., Pottawattamie Co., Iowa in 1910 and 1920.

CATHERINE OVERMAN - daughter of James L. Overman and Mary (Daily), was born 10 Nov 1846 in Clark Co., Indiana. Having moved with her parents to Nemaha Co., Nebraska she was apparently married in that state at the very young age of fifteen on 13 Apr 1862. Her husband, Peter Fraker, was born in New York in about 1834 and in 1860 appears to be enumerated with his brother Daniel as a sawyer residing in Benton Twp., Fremont Co., Iowa.

In 1870 the couple was enumerated in Nehama Co., Nebraska with their three children where Peter was listed as a merchant. Peter is believed to have died on 04 Dec 1878 and in 1880 Kate is listed residing in St. Deroin as the wife of Orlander McCann, age 28 who was born in Indiana - both his parents from Pennsylvania. Nothing further is known about him, and by 1900 Katie is listed in her daughter Nellie's household in Humbolt, Richardson Co., Nebraska as widowed. At this time her daughter has been married six years to David Cowman, and her son Harry Dreibelbis (by her 1st husband Joseph) is listed in the household. In 1910 and 1920 Catherine is listed as living alone. She died 22 May 1929 in Stella, Richardson Co., Nebraska.

By Joseph she had one son, Harry Huber Dreibelbis. She married 2nd David Cowman in about 1894, he having been born in Nebraska in about Mar of 1872. She died in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., Nebraska on 28 Oct 1930.

SARAH ARABELL OVERMAN - daughter of James L. Overman and Mary (Daily), was born 22 Mar 1850 in Clark Co., Indiana. She moved with her parents to Nemaha Co., Nebraska where she was enumerated in the family as age ten in 1860. Although she is typically enumerated as "Arabell," she was not enumerated in her parents' or brother's household in 1870 where they were living in Andrew Co., Missouri. She had married a M.E. Ladd sometime before her daughter Mollie was born in 1872, but a search in Lincoln Twp., did not locate any Ladd family in 1870, and the whereabouts for her during this time period is not known.

In 1880 she is listed as widowed with two young daughters living in her parents' household in St. Deroin, Nemaha Co., Nebraska. The only lead for M.E. Ladd is the census indicating that he was born in Kentucky and both the girls were born in Kansas. About three years later she married John M. McCullough who was born in Ohio on 12 May 1837. In August of 1885 they had a daughter Ona M. McCullough while living in Nebraska who was also enumerated in the 1900 census living in Stella, Richardson Co., Nebraska with her widowed mother and grandmother. According to "A Biographical and Genealogical History of Southeastern Nebrasa" which was published in 1904, Arabell's husband John died in September of this year at Trading Post, Linn Co., Kansas.

In 1910 she is listed as a carpet weaver living just a couple doors down from her brother James. She is listed as widowed , the mother of six children, two living. Only three of the children's names are known. Sarah died 27 Dec 1929.

Kessler, son of Peter who is also listed in the household. This Mary's birth is recorded as November 1871 and place of birth Kansas. Nothing further has been researched to confirm the connection - simply a possible lead.
  2. Emma Ladd - born about 1874 in Kansas.

  1. Ona M. McCullough - born August 1885 in Nebraska.

JAMES HARVEY OVERMAN - son of James L. Overman and Mary (Daily), born 10 Jan 1852 in Clark Co., Indiana. According to a brief biographical sketch, James was a well-known veteran hotel-keeper at Stella, Nebraska. He had come out to the neighboring state of Iowa with his parents in the spring of 1852, and one year later removed to Missouri.

In 1858, when he was about six years of age, he came with his family where they settled in St. Deroin and his father operated a ferry. The town was under a territorial form of government at that time and was located on the Missouri River in the tract of land set aside by the Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1830. In the early 1840's, Joseph Deroin, an Otoe halfbreed chief, had moved to the area and opened a trading post which served less than 250 persons. James would later recall the death of Deroin who was killed by a man named Beddow in a quarrel, and later acquitted.

There he received his schooling in the primitive schools of his boyhood days and in 1860 was enumerated in his parents' household in Nemaha county. At the age of seventeen years of age began clerking in his brother-in-law’s store and was listed in the 1870 census residing in Andrew Co., Missouri. The following year he began clerking in a store at Severance, Kansas, and was there engaged in business until 1874 when he returned to St. Deroin and clerked in the store of A. J. Ritter. In 1877 he was appointed postmaster at St. Deroin under President Hayes, and served until 1879 when he moved to Corning, Missour where he was enumerated in the 1880 census. While there he was there engaged in business for about three years, at the end of which time he removed to Stella where he opened a store and, with the exception of ten months spent conducting a hotel at Humboldt, resided there where his hotel was one of the best-known and most popular hostelries in the county. Located at the corner of Main and Third streets, its brick structure was three stories in height, and equipped in accordance with modern demands for the greatest degree of comfort on the part of the traveling public.

James was appointed Post Master by President McKinley in 1898 and was listed as such in the 1900 census. He was reappointed by Presidents Roosevelt & Taft and in 1910 was still serving in that capacity until 1916. In 1920 he was listed as a gardener in the home of his sister-in-law; and in 1930 he was living in Lincoln City, Lancaster Co., Nebraska in the home of his niece Nellie (Fraker), wife of David Cowman.

He was united in marriage on March 24, 1878 to Lucinda Marie Thomas, who was born in Putnam county, Missouri, daughter of Elijah P. and Samantha Ann (Hillis) Thomas, natives of Kentucky and Indiana, respectively, who became pioneers in Missouri. Elijah P. Thomas was born at Maysville, Kentucky, February 11, 1827, son of John and Margaret (Harmon) Thomas, the former of whom was born in Kentucky about 1795 and the latter in Champaign county, Ohio, not far from Urbana.

James and Lucinda were members of the Church of Christ (Scientist) and took an earnest interest in the affairs of the same. They had no children of their own, but reared to womanhood a niece of Mrs. Overman, Mary Palmer, who was educated in the schools of Stella and who on September 22, 1895, married George W. Harris, who was engaged in sheep raising at North Yakima, Washington. Mr. Overman was also a member of the local lodge of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He died on 21 Jan 1937, his wife preceding him in death in 1935.

CHARLES DAILY - son of John Daily and Mary Maria (Overman), was born 21 Nov 1847 in Clark Co., Indiana. He enlisted in the Missouri 43rd Infantry, Company I during the Civil War and served as a private until he was mustered out in 1865. The following year he married Margaret Emaline Tibbetts who was born in Charlestown, Indiana on 09 May 1847 and was the daughter of Moses and Keziah (Nicholson). They were married in Rockport, Atchison Co., Missouri on 07 Jan 1866 and had their first child the end of October that year. In 1870 they were enumerated in that place living next door to his parents with their three young children, and in 1880 the census lists Charles as a blacksmith.

Sometime after 1887 the family moved to Johnstown, Brown Co., Nebraska where Charles died on 27 Mar 1892 at the age of forty-four, leaving his widow Margaret with several small children. In 1900 the census finds her in Ainsworth Pct. with four of her ten living children, another four having died prior to 1900 - those being: Elmer in 1870; Oscar in 1883; Caroline in 1889; and Maggie in 1888.

Margaret married (2) Aaron Daniel Crawford who was born in New York in about 1857. They were married in Brown Co., NE on 04 Oct 1903 and in 1910 they were enumerated in Mill Creek Pct., Stevens Co., Washington. She died in Walla Walla Co., Washington (where her son Charles was living) on 02 Apr 1911.

In 1910 their household included only two of their children; and in 1920 Samuel and Sarah are listed in their son "Roy's" household. Sarah died 22 May 1925 in Rockport, and Samuel on 12 Dec 1932.

JOHN T. DAILY - son of John Daily and Mary Maria (Overman), was born Aug 1854 in Iowa. In the 1870 census he is listed as "Deaf & Dumb," and was not located in the 1880 - speculating he may have been enrolled in a special school and therefore not listed in his mother's household. The 1900 census indicates he had a son Ralph who was born in Nebraska 24 Nov 1892, but who Ralph's mother is, is not known.

John T. married Eliza M. Collins (who was first married to Thomas A. Forney) in Falls City on 05 Mar 1898, and two of her sons by her first marriage are listed in their household. The 1910 census lists he and Eliza as both speaking English and sign language, and . In 1920 John and his wife are living on Lane Street and he is still working as a house carpenter. In 1930 John's son Ralph and his wife appear to be living in the same residence on Lane Street with his father, Ralph working as a decorator in a paint shop. - John died two years later in Falls City on 06 Jul 1932.

ARILDA DAILY - daughter of John Daily and Mary Maria (Overman), was born in November of1860 in Missouri. She was married to Hugh Vest, son of James, on 04 Jul 1877 in Atchison county. In 1880 the family was enumerated in Polk Twp. with their two small children, their youngest being but four months old. By 1900, their family has grown considerably and the census indicates Arilda is the mother of nine children, eight living - with seven included in their household. Although the 1910 census is extremely faded, the ages seem to match up with the following: Arilda, a widowed washing woman and head of household - age 51; Earl 19; Bert age 13 (both wagon drivers for a grocery store); and Richard age twelve.

If the census records are correct, Hugh Vest died prior to 1910, and it is believed that Arilda died on 14 Nov 1918.

MARY ETTA "MARIETTA" DAILY - daughter of John Daily and Mary Maria (Overman), was born about 10 Nov 1863 in Missouri. She married William Teague, the son of Joseph and Mahala (Evans) of Kentucky. He was born in Missouri in July of 1857 and was enumerated in 1860 as age two living in Clark Twp. very near the Moses Tibbetts family. In 1870 the Teagues were living next door to the Charles Daily family who lived next to Mary Etta's, and William is then listed as age thirteen. The couple married in about 1880/1881 and had at least one son Earl who was born in January of 1883 but the threesome has not yet been located in the 1880 census - none living with either family. Additional family records, including the burial place of William, indicate he died 29 Oct 1883 when Earl was only nine months old, and why Earl would subsequently come to use Morse as his last name.

Just when it was that Marietta married her second husband, Charles Morse, is not known; and she is yet to be located in the 1900 census. She does, however , appear to have had one son with him, Harry Dean who was born in 1888. The 1910 census lists Harry Dean as the son of John Peterson, but a closer look at the census states they were not married until about 1902. The census also notes this as a second marriage for both - so is possible Marietta had never legally married William Teague? John's first wife is believed to be Hannah Sorenson who was born in South Dakota, but died prior to 1900 when John was listed as a widowed in Latah Co., Idaho with his two children from his marriage to Hannah: Everett N., born 19 Jan 1894 and Minnie A. born Mar 1898.

In 1910, 1920 and 1930 they were residing at 501 or 502 Avenue C in Snohomish, Washington. Marietta died in that city on 15 Feb 1934. She was laid to rest in the G.A.R. Cemetery in Snohomish (burial 2234), an historic cemetery which was established by the G.A.R.'s Morton Post 110 in 1889. Still active, it is located in Snohomish on Riverview Road and is the resting place of approximately two hundred Union veterans from the Civil War.

After her death, Marietta's husband John Peterson went to California where his daughter Minnie married Michel Leonis of France in 1933. Where John died is not known, but is presumed to be in Los Angeles county where his daughter died on 20 Oct 1944.
