Chronology of Chenango Co., NY

1785 Governor George Clinton buys land from the Oneida Indians - this land later mapped and surveyed, becomes Guilford.
1786 Mass gives up its claims to land west of the Unadilla River - this portion becoming part of New York.
1787 Settlers begin moving into area of land which becomes Chenango Co.
1793 Township of Fayette, which was settled two years earlier, is now named "Oxford."
1794 Joel Johnson arrives in the area which becomes Guilford.
1797 John and Loretta Dibble settle at the site of the hamlet of Guilford.
1798 Chenango county is formed from Tioga and Herkimer counties and Oxford becomes part of the new county.

1799

Daniel Johnson, son of Daniel, goes to the wilds of New York to visit his brother and buys 160 acres. There he builds a log house next to his brother Joel's property.
1800 Sometime before this year, Ebenzer Root settles five miles southeast of Oxford Village (formed from Jericho), having come from Great Barrington, MA.
1800 Daniel Johnson returns to Connecticut and brings his wife Mary (Norton) and their young family back with him to New York.
1800 Cousins Aaron & Joel Root arrive in Guilford from Great Barrington, Berkshire, MA
1802 Seth M. Johnson, son of Daniel and Mary, is born on the 4th of October. His siblings, whose dates of birth are not yet known, are: Hiram, Alpheus, Joel, Samantha (who marries Ethan Pier), Louisa (who marries Lyman Bradley), and Mary (who married Ithuel Blake).
1802 Oliver Ingersoll arrives in Guilford from Great Barrington, MA.
1804 Thomas Horton Ingersoll arrives in Guilford from Great Barrington, Berkshire, MA.
1804 Jerusha Root, daughter of Ebenezer and Cynthia (Whipple), is born on the 22nd of February and marries Seth Johnson sometime before 1829.
1805 Charlotte Root, daughter of Ebenezer and Cynthia (Whipple), is born on the 5th of July and later marries (1) Ira Dibble; (2) Charles Godfrey.
1807 Coventry is formed on the 7th of February, named after town of same in CT in which many of the first settlers came. One of those given a grant was Elihu Root, one of the VT sufferers; and Seth Johnson was among those who had come to Coventry in about 1792.
1807 Polly Root, daughter of Ebenezer and Cynthia (Whipple), is born on the 16th of April and latter marries Willis Gridley.
1809 Daniel Root, son of Ebenezer and Cynthia (Whipple), is born on the 29th of May.
1810 The 1810 Census for Bainbridge lists household of Seth Johnson in Jericho - one male between age of 26-45; three females under aged 10; andone female between 16-20 years of age.
1811 Harriet Root, daughter of Ebenezer and Cynthia (Whipple), is born on the 22nd of February and later marries John Young.
1813 Guilford separates from Oxford and is known as "Eastern."
1814 Jericho is named Bainbridge.
1814 Alanson Root, son of Ebenezer and Cynthia (Whipple), is born on the 19th of November but dies about three years later in 1817.
1815 David Ingersoll, son of Philip and Elizabeth (Bowsman), marries Hannah (Holcomb) on 12 March in Coventry - she the daughter of Levi and Lois (Gleason).
1815 Levi Ingersoll, son of David and Hannah (Holcomb) is born on the 7th of December in Coventry.
1816 Snows every month of the year causing starvation. The severe cold is linked to the volcanic eruption in Indonesia at the Island of Tambora in April of the previous year.
1817 Guilford receives this current name but people continue to refer to it as "Fayette" or "Fayetteville" for several decades.
1817 Silas and Cyrus Root, twin sons of Ebenezer and Cynthia (Whipple), are born on the 10th of February.
1817 William Niles Ingersoll, son of David and Hannah (Holcomb) is born on the 27th of July in Coventry.
1829 Hiram Titus Johnson, son of Seth and Jerusha (Root), is born in May.
1833 Daniel Johnson, son of Seth and Jerusha (Root), is born on the 21st of April. He becomes a prominent dairy farmer and stock raiser in Guilford and dies in 1915.
1833 On November 13th, a meteorite passes over Guilford and set fires. It Impacts in Colesville - is part of the Leonids Meteor Shower from comet Temple Tuttle.
1835 Philip Ingersoll, son of Daniel and martha (Briggs) and husband of Elizabeth Bowsman, dies in Bainbridge on the 26th of December.
1836 Elizabeth Bowsman-Ingersoll, wife of Philip, dieds on the 15th of May in Bainbrridge.
1842 Ebenezer Root, who was born in Great Barrington, Berkshire, MA on 17 Dec 1760, dies at the age of 82 on the 12th of February.
1847 Milton H. ROOT, age 55 marries Almira UNDERWOOD age 38, of Guilford on March 2nd.
1847 Betsey Fosburg (born about 1787), wife of Stephen, dies on May 15th and is buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery.
1847 On the 22nd of October, daughter Alice B. is born to Samuel B. and Maria Johnson.
1847 Sarah S. ROOT, age 20 of Guilford, marries Joseph YALE, 23 of Catskill on the 2nd of November.
1847 Sarah Johnson, daughter of Setha nd Jerusha (Roots) is born on 19th of November. She later married John H. Bower and resided in Chicago, IL.
1849 On the 13th of September, daughter Malissa Abigail Root is born to Silas and Matilda.
1849 Julia A. ROOT, age 24 of Guilford, marries Harlow NEWTON 24 of Bainbridge, on the 2nd of October.
1849 On the 15th of October, William IRELAND age 23 of Bainbridge marries to Mary MANNING age 22, also of Bainbridge.
1849 Williard Daniel Bradley, son of Louisa (Johnson) and Lyman Bradley, is born in Guilford. He later marries Eliza Twigg.
1850 On the 10th of July, L.C. Johnson age 28 of Coventry, marries Amanda M. CRISMAN age 20 of Coventry by Rev. Aaron Parker.
1852 Hiram Titus Johnson, son of Seth and Jerusha (Root), dies in Oregon City, OR on the 23rd of December, but is laid to rest in West Bainbridge Cemetery, his headstone reading: "He sought that distant land for his home, But found there his grave."
1854 In Oxford, John B. Root marries Martha B. SHAPELY on 23 March.
1854 Andrew J. Root marries Euphriamine KING on 16 Nov in Oxford.
1855 Guilford is flooded when the dam breaks. Most of its buildings are destroyed.
1855 James Root marries Martha U. MILES in Oxford on January 10th.
1855 Stephen Fosburg, who was born about 1783, dies on the 15th of October and is buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery.
1856 Cynthia Whipple-Root, wife of Ebenezer, ies on the 15th of February. she was born in Battleboro, Windham, VT in about 1789.
1859 Lyman Bradley, husband of Louisa (Johnson) dies in Guilford in August.
1862 The 114th regiment is formed which includes several Guilford men who fight in several southern states during the Civil War.
1864 Guilford's bucket brigade saves the town from a fire which destroys a block of buildings below Furnace Street on Main.
1864 Lottie Johnson, born about 1789 in CT dies in August at the age of 75.
1869 Daniel Johnson is listed in the Guilford business directory as a farmer owning 200 acres.
1870 Ithuel Blake, widowed husband of Mary (Johnson) and farmer of Coventry dies in Guilford in March.
1874 Milton H. Root, who was born in Massachusetts in about 1792, dies at the age of 82.
1880 Hannah Holcomb-Ingersoll, wife of David, dies in Coventry on the 12th of May. She was born in Unadilla, Ostego, NY on 14 Mar 1796 and was daughter of Levi and Lois (Gleason).
1889 Jerusha Root-Johnson, daughter of Ebenezer and Charlotte, and wife of Seth Johnson, dies on the 8th of July. She is laid to rest at the West Bainbridge Cemetery.
1897 Another fire wipes out the same block below Furnace Street.
1898 Harriet Root-Young is residing this year with her sister Jerusha and brother-in-law Daniel Johnson. She is considered intelligent, well informed , and a lady held in high esteem by her acquaintances.
1901 Harriet Root-Young dies on the 26th of October.
