The Neagle family descends
from Ireland and was commonly spelled Nagle, both
in Ireland and in records in the United States.
The name possibly derived from the Norman surname
de Angulo. Nagle is the Cork form of the name
whereas the Leinster form is Nangle, and the
Gaelic form is de Nogla. - Nothing of this
particular family is known prior to their arrival
in New York. The marriage of John Nagle to Ellen
or Helen Croty, was said to have been about 1855
in New York.
Attempting
to locate passenger records for that time period,
one John Nagle of Ireland left Liverpool on the
3rd of April 1854 aboard the ship Star of the
West, and arrived in New York. Of the name Croty
(more typically spelled Crotty), there were three
men who arrived at the Port of New York by this
name: William Crotty, age 21, laborer who
embarked at Cork, Ireland aboard the ship
Adirondack and arrived the 11th of April 1846;
Francis Crotty, age 27, an engineer who embarked
at Liverpool aboard the ship Oxford and arrived
in New York on the 15th of April 1847; and R.
Crotty (male) who was age 22 and embarked at
Liverpool aboard the ship Friendship and arrived
in New York on the 24th of May 1847.
What
is known of John Neagle, emigrant to New York,
was taken from his obituary and states in part
that he was born in Waterford, Ireland on the
17th of March 1833 and came with his father to
America when twenty years of age. He settled in
New York and was united in marriage to Miss Ellen
Croty in 1855 and they became the parents of
eight children - five boys and three girls, James
the oldest, having preceded him in death in 1887
and daughter Julia having died in infancy.
An 1860 census matches information
which indicates John and Ellen were living in Key
Port, Monmouth Co., New Jersey with their two
sons James and Thomas. The birth record of their
daughter Mary as having been born in this county
in 1861 supports the speculation that this is the
same family. Enumerated next to them is the
family of Thomas and Mary Neagle who were also
from Ireland and were the parents of four
children. It should be noted that both families'
surnames were spelled as "Nagle" as was
the common spelling in Ireland as previously
noted.
At
the time the 1870 census was taken, John
Neagle was listed as a railroad boss who was born
in Ireland, but by at least 1878 he is listed as
a farmer. Among the tax payers of 1878 there was
also a Saloon Keeper, A. Nagle in Chatsworth;
John Nagle in Owego Township, and another farmer
named Joseph Nagle in Cayuga. In the 1880 census for Chatsworth,
Livingston, IL - John Neagle was again listed as
a farmer who had been born in Ireland.
John
was last enumerated in his daughter Mary
Braddock's 1900 household. He died 11
January 1908 at Mary's home near Watseka,
Illinois. Although John's obituary states he was buried in the St.
Patrick Cemetery in Chatsworth, Livingston
County, Illinois, there is either no headstone
that remains or no inscription that was found.
However, a white tiered stone which was read with
some difficulty by Vera Gerwick of the Lexington
Genealogical & Historical Society in
Illinois, has record of an Ellen Nagle, wife of
John who was buried there. The inscription
indicates she died April 12, 1885 at the age of
51 and that she was a "Native of Kil,
McThomas Co., Waldcord, Ireland." This
information is supported by the 1910 Barnes Co.,
ND census for record of her sons William and
John, who indicate their mother was born in
Ireland.

1865/1866 in New York; listed in the
household of his brother William
Neagle in 1910 Baldwin Twp., Barnes
Co., ND - his age is listed as 40;
appears to be listed living in
Chatsworth, IL 1920 ED #22 in the
household of Peter Kurstenbasch -
listed as age 54. His place of birth
(NY) and place of his parents birth
(Ireland) indicate him as the correct
John Neagle.

passed away on 30 Oct 1925.
Richard J.
Neagle - born in Nov 1869 in

| Mary Neagle - born 24 Dec 1861 in
Raritan, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, daughter of
John and Ellen (Croty) and was living in
Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois with her
parents and sibling by 1870, and was enumerated with
them prior to her marriage in 1880. She married Oscar Braddock, son of John H.
& Sarah (Fuller) in Chatsworth on 10 March
1881. Oscar was born in December of 1855 and both
were enumerated in the 1900 census for that town with
their children: Bessie, Harley, Lottie, Oscar and
Earl. Mary is listed as having been married 19
years and mother of six children, all living, so
apparently one has left home by this time.
-Bessie, the oldest in this census year listed at
home, is aged 16, so it seems likely that there
is an older child. A marriage record for a Mary
A. Braddock to Albert Hagen in 25 Dec 1900 is
listed in Livingston Co., Illinois, however, it
is not known if this is the missing child.
In 1910 the family is residing in
Iroquois County, Illinois with only Harley, Oscar
and Earl listed with their parents.

| Ella E. Neagle - daughter of John and
Ellen (Croty), was born 26 April 1865 in
Schenectady, NY. She was living in Chatsworth,
Livingston Co., Illinois with her parents and
siblings by 1870, and enumerated there
again in 1880 listed as aged sixteen. A search for the town of
Roberts, Illinois - located this town in Ford
county which prompted a search for Ella Neagle
who was listed as Ella Knight in her father's
obituary. A marriage record was located in that county
indicating Ella married Elmer A. Knight on 02 Feb
1887, making it possible to then search for Ella
in census records and locating her with her
husband and children in the 1900, 1910 & 1920 census records for
Illinois.
The 1917
Livingston Farmer's Directory indicates that
their Post Office listed was Roberts - this lying
within Germanville Twp. - Here Elmer owned 110
acres which he farmed and was listed as a
resident in that county since 1876. Wife Ella and
the following four children were listed in this
directory as well.
Elmer died in
Pontiac, Livingston Co., Illinois on 10 Mar 1934
and Ella on 08 Feb 1941. They were both laid to
rest in the Lyman Township Cemetery in Roberts,
Ford Co., Illinois.

William F. Neagle - born 23 Nov 1870* in
Chatsworth to John and Ellen, he was their first
child born in Illinois. Although his obituary
information indicates he was born this year, a
look at the census images list him as age three
in 1870 and age twelve 1880; and following the birth order of
the older silbings, it would suggest that he was
born in 1867 rather than 1870 as is also listed
on the burial records..
According
to his obituary, William came to North Dakota in
1892 and it's possible he is the same William
listed in the 1900 household of James &
Matilda Elliott, landlords from Canada and of
Irish descent. This family residing in Hope Twp.,
Steele Co., North Dakota and are listed as
dwelling #76. This William's is listed as born
Nov 1871 and states he was single, age 28 born IL
both parents born in Ireland, which matches all
other information.
About
four years later he married Clara Anora Danforth,
daughter of Albro Benvard Danforth and Eunice
Matilda (Short), in Valley City, Barnes Co.,
North Dakota on 28 Nov 1904.. They were located
in the 1910 in Baldwin Twp., Barnes County, ND
as head of house with wife Clara and children
Helen, Gladys; and his brother John - aged 38.
Parents listed as both having been born in
Ireland. He is then enumerated in 1920 Baldwin Twp., Barnes Co, ND census
as head of house with wife Clara and children
William, Helen, Ruth, Constance, and Mildred.
William
died suddenly on 30 Oct 1925 just four days after
his youngest child turned eight. Clara contined
to reside on the farm and was head of household
in the 1930 census. In about 1936 she
went out to Arizona where her son-in-law V.W.
"Dave" and daughter Connie had gone to
work on the dams along the Verde River. She later
lived with them off and on in Phoenix until her
death on 08 Dec 1959. She was laid to rest at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale, Arizona.
William was laid to rest at Hope Cemetery along
with other family in North Dakota.

| Richard J. Neagle - son of John and Ellen
(Croty), was born in Chatsworth, Livingston Co.,
Illinois in November of 1869. In 1870 he was listed as nine
months of age, and in 1880 as aged ten. By 15 Sep
1896 he was apparently residing in Iowa at which
time he married Elizabeth (Smith) in Lake City,
Calhoun County. Prior to this marriage, his young
wife Elizabeth had married Albert Knapp at
Jefferson, Greene Co., Iowa on 02 Jul 1894, but a
mere two months later she was widowed on 06 Sep
1894. The cause of Albert's death is not yet
known, but he was born in Iowa on 29 May 1872 and
was the son of Mary and Thomas Jackson Knapp who
had served with Co. D of the 8th Iowa Infantry
during the Civil War. The family, including
Albert, were enumerated in the 1880 census residing in Lake City,
Calhoun Co., Iowa. In 1900 Richard and Elizabeth were residing
in Lake City with their infant daughter Silva E.
who died the following year at the age of
thirteen months. According to the 1905 South
Dakota state census, the family had been living
in the state for two years, indicating they had
moved there in about 1903. Supported by the
census is the birth of their son Frank in
Artesian, South Dakota in 1904. In 1910 the family is listed in
Benedict Twp., Sanborn County, but four years
later in April of 1914 Richard died in Artesian.
On 08 Jan 1916 his widow Elizabeth was united in
marriage to John Veth in Tulsa, Oklahoma but in 1920 they were residing in Sanborn Co.,
SD.
After farming for
six years in South Dakota, Elizabeth and John
removed to Lake City, Calhoun Co., Iowa where
they were enumerated in the 1930 census, and where they
lived the remainder of their lives. Elizabeth
died 22 Jun 1952, and according to her obituary was the grandmother of
twelve. Her husband John died a few years later
on 01 Jul 1956 and according to his obituary and other records, was a native of
Holland who had emigrated to the United States in
1901. He and Elizabeth were both laid to rest in
Lake City Cemetery.
