| Martha
was the daughter of Willis and Mary E. (Rich)
Jackson. She was born in Falmouth, Rush
County, Indiana on the 5th of November. Her father held
donation land claim 3297 OC in Linn County,
Oregon and they arrived there in the year
1852. The death of W.R. Jackson who died on
the plains and had been born in Rush Co., IN,
is speculated to be the son who was born 21
Mar 1851 and died on the 9th of August in
1852.
Martha's other
siblings who were born in Rush County,
Indiana and who went to Oregon were Elizabeth
born 1840; Ephriam Clifford born 1841; and
her younger sister Saritha. The family would
eventually include Harold, Lourinda, Sarah
Marie Cordelia, Henry Clay, Olive F., and
Jefferson D. Jackson.
On the 15th of
October 1861, Martha "Nellie"
Jackson married Isaac Van Dorsey Mossman who
had arrived in Oregon City in 1853. He was
the son of George Mossman and Hannah (Brown)
formerly of Grayson County, Virginia. They
had removed to Wayne County, Indiana where
other Quakers had also gone and then later
lived in Illinois and Iowa.
"Nellie"
and Isaac became the parents of seven
daughters and two sons, but separated and
later divorced in 1881. At the time the 1880
census was taken, Nellie was listed as head
of her household which consisted of her three
daughters: Clara the oldest was 17, Annie was
5 and Lottie was just six months. Nellie was
listed as a dressmaker, married and living in
Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
She died on 21
September 1930 in Hollywood, California.
