Morse - Descendants of Joseph Morse & Hester (Pierce)
 

The Morse name is said to claim high antiquity, having first occurred in the records in 1358 during the reign of Edward III. The following line details the descendancy of Joseph, said to have been the eldest son of Joseph and Dorothy Morse, and that he embarked at Epswich, England in April of 1634 on the ship "Elizabeth" - William Andrews master and settled in what would become the Massachusetts Bay area.

He married Hester Pierce who was born in about 1615 and was the daughter of John Pierce, a weaver of Norfolk, England and wife Elizabeth, residents of Watertown where five of the births of Hester and Joseph's children were recorded.

Second Generation
 
JOSEPH MORSE, son of Joseph, was born on 30 Apr 1637 in Watertown. He married Susanna SHATTUCK daughter of William and Susanna (Hayden) on 12 Apr 1661, she having been born in 1643. They moved to Groton, Massachusettes in Middlesex county sometime around 1664 to 1667 and there Joseph died in 1677. His widow then married John Fay (whose first wife was Mary Brigham who had died in about 1676 in Watertown) and had by him four children: David, Gershom, Ruth, and Deliverance Fay.

  2. Hester MORSE - born on 11 Sep 1664 in Watertown, MA; died on 27 Aug 1725. Hester married Nathaniel JOSSELYN of Marlboro on 12 Feb 1684/1685.

  3. Joseph MORSE - born on 11 Nov 1667; died on 11 Jul 1733.

  4. Samuel MORSE - born on 04 Sep 1670; died on 22 Oct 1726.

  5. Mary MORSE - born on 11 Feb 1671 in Groton, Middlesex, MA; married John BARNARD,JR. on 23 Jul 1694 and were the parents of seven children.

  6. Hannah MORSE - born on 07 Apr 1674 in Groton, Middlesex, MA; married John NEWTON of Marlboro in 1704.

  7. Jonathan MORSE - died on 08 Jan 1754.

 

JOHN MORSE, second son of Joseph and Hester, was born on 28 Feb 1639 in Watertown, Massachusetts. He setteled in Lancaster where he married his first wife Anne, who was the daughter of John Smith who was admitted freeman on 22 May 1639 and may have been the John Smith who died in Lancaster in July of 1669.

The Will of John Smith, of Lancaster, dated April 12, 1665 mentions son John, daugher Ann, son Richard, daughter Alice, and he appointed "my beloved son-in-law John Mose," sole executor. It is probable he is the son of John, an early proprietor of Watertown and his wife Isabella. This John died at the age of 60 on 12 Oct 1639.

  2. John MORSE - born on 07 Apr 1662 in Lancaster, MA; Died soon after his birth.

Apparently, after the death of his wife, Anne Smith, John returned to Watertown and there married Abigail Stearns, daughter of Isaac and Mary (Barker) on 27 Apr 1666 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA. [ Grafton's Records of the Chruch of Christ, state John Morse had married Abigail Edwards on this date and that she was then the widow of a Mr. Edwards]

John was admitted freeman on 15 May 1754 and was selectman 1693, 1694, 1696, 1697, 1698 and was designated ensign before he was elected deacon which took place on 30 June 1697 as one of the first deacons of the second church (Mr. Angier's).

John's wife Abigail died on 16 Oct 1690 in Watertown, and John died there on 23 Jul 1702. On the 10th of August 1702, administraton was granted to his son James, who was at the same time appointed guardian of his brother Nathaniel who was about 14 year old.

  2. James MORSE - born on 25 Nov 1668 in Watertown; admitted to Mr. Angier's church on the 3rd of May 1702 and was administer of his father's estate; became guardian of his younger brother Nathaniel. James married Abigail MORSE daughter of Jonathan and Abigail (Shattuck) on 27 Apr 1699. Abigail was born on 05 Dec 1679. James died on 26 Apr 1718 in Watertown, Massachusetts.

  3. John MORSE - born on 15 Mar 1669/1670 in Watertown; lived in Needham in 1718. He married (1) Elizabeth GOODING who died on 21 Nov 1701; he married (2) Hepzibah STONE on 26 May 1700 in Watertown, she having been born on 05 May 1677 in Watertown

  4. Joseph MORSE - born on 25 Aug 1671; died on 24 Jun 1709.

  5. Abigail MORSE - born on 23 Dec 1673 in Watertown; died on 03 Mar 1674 in Watertown, Massachusetts.

  6. Abigail MORSE - born on 06 Aug 1677 in Watertown; married Deacon Jonathan PARKHURST.

  7. Isaac MORSE - born on 05 Jan 1678 in Watertown, Massachusetts.

  8. Samuel MORSE - born on 21 Jun 1682 in Watertown; probably died before 1702.

  9. Nathaniel MORSE - christened on 29 Jan 1687/1688 in Watertown; his brother James became his guardian upon the death of their father who died in 1702. Nathaniel married (1) Grace DYER on 10 Feb 1701/1702; and married (2) Phebe COOK on 10 Feb 1717/1718 in Weston,Middlesex, MA.
 

JONATHAN MORSE, son of Joseph and Hester (Pierce), was born on 07 Nov 1643 in Watertown, Massachusetts. He was poprietor and town clerk of Groton and married Abigail (Shattuck), daughter of William and Susanna (Hayden) on 17 Oct 1678 in Watertown.

Jonathan died on 31 Jul 1686 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. His wife Abigail who had been born about 1657 in Watertown, died in 1694 in Groton.

  1. Abigail MORSE - born on 05 Dec 1679; married James MORSE son of John MORSE and Abigail (Stearns) on 27 Apr 1699. James was born on 25 Nov 1668 in Watertown, and died there on 26 Apr 1718. He had been admitted to Mr. Angier's church on the 3rd of May 1702; was administer of his father's estate and became guardian of his younger brother Nathaniel.

  2. Hannah MORSE - born on 03 Sep 1682; married John WELLINGTON on 19 May 1699.

  3. Ruth MORSE - born on 15 Apr 1684; married Jonathan ROBINSON on 19 Jun 1706.

  4. Jonathan MORSE - born on 23 Jan 1686/1687.
 

HESTER MORSE, daughter of Joseph and Hester (Pierce) was born on 07 Mar 1645/1646 in Watertown, Massachusetts. She married Jonathan BULLARD, son of George BULLARD and Beatrice on 09 Dec 1669 in Watertown. Jonathan was born on 12 Jul 1647 in Watertown.

On the 9th of February 1695/96, Jonathan bought of the heirs of George Woodward, 108 acres of land bounded east by Edward How; west by by John Eddy, north by G. Chruch, Simpson and John Moss; and south by Commons and Richard Beers.

  4. Joseph BULLARD - was married to Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Spring and had Esther who was baptized 5 Dec 1714; Esther born 4 Jan 1715/16; and Abigail born 22 May 1718. After Joseph's death, his widow married Thomas Upham on 26 Apr 1723 and he died 25 Feb 1729/30; Elizabeth died 6 Aug 1753.
 
JEREMIAH MORSE, son of Joseph and Hester (Pierce) was born about 1649 in Watertown. He was a proprietor of Groton and married Abigail (Woodward), daugther of John and Abigail (Benjamin) on 13 Jan 1981/82 in Watertown. She died on 13 April 1683. Jeremiah died 27 Sep 1719 in Newton, Middlesex, MA.

Third Generation
 

JOSEPH MORSE, son of Joseph Morse and Susanna Shattuck, was born on 11 Nov 1667 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. He died on 11 Jul 1733 in Marlboro, MA. His children were all born in Watertown, but he later moved to Marlboro.

"Joseph Morse, Samuel Morse, Samuel Bigelow, and John Bemis, bought December 25th 1635, of the heirs of John Alcocke, 350 acres bordering upon Marlborough known as "The Farm." Joseph settled in the house which was said to have been built by Alcocke; and Samuel built his house southerly, Jonathan building his upon a tract of land adjoing, so that one garrison would proctect all the families.

Joseph married Grace WARREN on 20 Jan 1690/1691 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA. Grace died on 22 Jul 1753 in Marlboro, MA. He was admitted to Mr. Angier's church on 10 April 1702.

SAMUEL MORSE, son of Joseph Morse and Susanna (Shattuck), was born on 04 Sep 1670 in Groton, Middlesex, MA; died on 22 Oct 1726 in Marlborough, MA. His wife's name was Grace and births and baptisms of his children are recorded at Watertown. He later settled at Marlboro. - Grace died on 10 Jul 1758 in Marlborough, MA.

  1. Joseph MORSE - left "non compos" (of unsound mind) after an early fright by the Indians. His sister Grace devoted much of her life to the care of him.

  2. Samuel MORSE - born 20 Jul 1696; married Lydia NEWTON on 12 Aug 1719 and after her death, married Esther Baker in November of 1732. Samuel died on 27 Dec 1755.

  3. Susanna MORSE - born 22 Dec 1698 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA; married Aaron FORBUSH on 13 Jan 1719 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.

  4. Elizabeth MORSE - christened 24 Mar 1700 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA.

  5. Grace MORSE - christened 23 Aug 1702 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA. She devoted her life to the care of her brother Joseph.

  6. Jacob MORSE - christened 06 Jun 1703 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA.

JONATHAN MORSE, son of Joseph and Susanna (Shattuck), was born in Groton, Middlesex, MA. Jonathan was in Marlborough in 1711 and was assigned to Captain Howe's garrison with Samuel Stevens, James, Howe, Jona Howe and Samuel Stow. He married (1) Mary in 1706, she having been born 18th of July 1685 in Marlborough, MA and died on 10 Feb 1727 in Marlborough, MA. Jonathan died on 08 Jan 1754.

Jonathan married (2) Mary CHURCH on 01 May 1729 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA. Mary died on 02 Sep 1750 in Marlborough, MA.

JOSEPH MORSE, son John and Abigail (Stearns), was born on 25 Aug 1671 in Watertown, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth SAWTEL, daughter of Jonathan and Mary on 25 Aug 1691 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. Elizabeth was born on 03 Feb 1668/1669 Joseph died on 24 June 1709 on a visit in Guilford. His estate was administered by his widow Elizabeth on the 5th of September.

  1. Elizabeth MORSE - married John THATCHER of Groton, the son of Samuel THATCHER and Mary on 24 Oct 1712 in Middlesex, MA. John was born on 22 Jan 1685/1686 in Middlesex, MA. He died on 28 Feb 1743/1744 in Middlesex, MA.

  2. Joseph MORSE - born on 19 Aug 1693 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA. The marriage record indicates he was a resident of Newton. He married Elizabeth PARK daughter of John PARK and Elizabeth MILLER on 30 Nov 1720. Elizabeth was born in 1701.

  3. Abigail MORSE - born on 01 Jan 1696; married Joshua HEMENWAY of Framingham on 01 Jan 1718/1719. She died on 25 May 1739.

  4. Zechariah MORSE - born on 12 Aug 1699. He settled in Southboro, and married Huldah WHITNEY on 16 Nov 1724 in Framingham, Worcester, MA. They were the parents of three children.

  5. Samuel MORSE - born on 07 Jun 1702. He married (1) Sarah HILL on 07 Jun 1732, she having died in 1740 and he married (2) Sarah PUFFER on 12 May 1741; she died on 08 Feb 1772 and Samuel died on 25 Apr 1782 in Wrentham, MA.

  6. Deacon Jonathan MORSE - born on 10 Feb 1704. He died on 01 Mar 1801.

  7. Elizabeth MORSE - christened on 06 Mar 1708/1709; married John CLAYES OR CLOYES of Framingham on 10 Dec 1730.
 
JONATHAN BULLARD, son Hester MORSE and Jonathan Bullard, was born on 25 Dec 1672 in Watertown, Middlesex, MA. He died in Watertown, Middlesex, MA on 14 Sep 1719. His widow Anna married on 24 May 1727, Edward Harrington of Watertown as his second wife.
