Moorman - Descendants of Zachariah of Isle of Wight
Compiled by Patricia Davidson-Peters © 2006

Because of the very tangled lines of this family, I previously hesitated in posting the information on the Moorman family that I have researched. My Clark, Ballard, Adams, and Anthony lines run in and out of this family througout several generations. Following the Quaker records has been the best source of tying families together, however I still caution to use this as a guideline. I have included mostly information that pertains to my lines, but may have other information available from the many sources I viewed on microfilm. (pdp 2006)

The family originated in England, its name appearing there as early as the fourteenth century. The usual spelling is Moorman, but sometimes Morman, Moreman, or Mooreman; the meaning of the word is obvious, "man of the moor."

Between 1619 and 1622, twenty five hundred settlers went to Virginia. Among them was Thomas Moorman, who in 1619, went to the new colonies within the employ of the Virginia Company of London on board the ship Bona Nova, under the service of Captain Mathewe.
In 1620, Zachariah Moorman1, the son of Thomas, was born on the Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England while his father, Thomas was in Virginia. Upon his return, Thomas signified in a petition dated July 7th, that he had satisfied his service with the Company, and was thereby granted lands in Virginia.

In 1639, Zachariah Moorman, at the age of nineteen, joined the English army and advanced to the rank of captain in which capacity he served under Oliver Cromwell through the Irish campaign. He remained for a while in Belfast where he met Mary Candler who was born about 1624 in England, and was the daughter of Lt. William Candler - an English Army Officer in Ireland. They married in 1646 and by time he had left the army, his family had disassociated themselves with the Chruch of England and had become members of the newly formed Society of Friends under the leadership of George Fox.

In 1669, Zachariah Moorman, along with his children, Charles, Thomas and Sally Ann, sailed from Southampton on the Glasgow and landed in Barbados in West Indies. Accompanied on this voyage, was the Michael Clark family, including his son, Micajah Clark who had married Zachariah's daughter Sally Ann Moorman.

In 1670, Zachariah Moorman, emigrated from the Isle of Wight to Nansemond County, Virginia, where Quakers, like himself, found refuge. Thomas Moorman's name first appeared in Virginia records where in Nansemond County Virginia. The St. Peter's Parish Register gives the baptism of their two children: (1) Mary; baptized August, 1686; (2) Andrew; baptized November 1689.

Between 1678 and 1688, Thomas Moorman was living in what had become New Kent county, probably at Green Springs, approximately thirty miles above Jamestown where there was a Quaker settlement. There another child, Charles, was born to them.

Some records state Charles was born in 1690, and other records speculate that this family was of Scots origin rather than English., and that the surname Moorman found in an encyclopedia of Scot surnames refers to the occupation of a sheriff of the moor. Some of the secondary references - in particular "Colonel William Candler of Georgia, His Ancestry and Progeny by D. A. Candler, uses words and dialect of the lowland Scots.

So although the exact ancestral home of the Moormans remains in some dispute, the lineage following Charles Moorman who was born in Virginia, is fairly well documented although it is highly recommended that you use this information as a guidline to assist you in your search. -pdp (2005)

Charles Moorman was born about 1690 and was the grandson of Zachariah and son of Thomas. He became the most influential of the Quakers in Louisa County, Virginia where a considerable number of Quakers had purchased land.

Charles married Elizabeth Reynolds. There is some dispute as to whether she was the daughter of Christopher Reynolds and Elizabeth, or the daughter of Thomas “Renalls”, the recorded baptism dated 15 of March 1690-1691. The Louisa County court records simply identify Charles’ wife as Elizabeth. She died in 1763.

Records of Campbell County, Virginia document the freeing of his slaves. By deeds of manumission, on May 28, 1788, Charles provided for the freedom of this thirty-three slaves- those of age immediately and those under age on becoming of age. These deeds were confirmed in his will dated September 2, 1778 in which his executors were particularly instructed to make application to the General Assembly for an act legalizing the "freedom hereby intended.

Records of the War Department in Richmond, Virginia indicate that Charles was a cpatain in Washington's army and died in Beford County, fifteen miles from Lynchburg, from a wound received at the Ballte of Guilford Court House which was fought on 15 Mar 1781. (This information provided in Anthony Roots & Branches, but not personally verifiied- pdp).

Note: Some researchers list him having married Mary Venable after the death of his wife. However, according to records I've researched, I believe that Charles Moorman to have been the son of Achilles and his wife Mary (Adams).

His first big break came with the publication of his short story, "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" in papers across the country. In all he would publish over thirty books. Among some of his most famous novels were The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), Life on the Mississippi (1883). The Prince and the Pauper (1881), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).
