| Here Tom has moved his hair
away from his forehead to reveal the
gunshot wound he received at the Battle
of Helena, Arkansas where he was shot in
the head and left for dead. Surviving the wound
and surgery, Tom recovered to raise a
large family and died in 1916. Most of
his life he worked as a house carpenter
or supervised the jobs of his sons who
took up the trade.
