ISAAC COOK MOORE - son of
Joseph and Sarah (Grubs), was born 1833 in
Pennsylvania and came to Collinsville, Illinois with his parents in 1844
where his father started a blacksmith shop which
was located on North Goethe Street. After
the death of his father, Isaac took over the
cowbell factory and in 1876 sold it to Christian
Blum who had come from Germany, operated a
hardware store and had previously owned a
business which supplied tin roofs for buildings.
Isaac
married on 23 Mar 1854 in Madison County, IL
Julia Caroline Slayback who had been born in
Illinois in about 1838 and was the daughter of
Solomon and Elly (House). He was listed
with his family in Collinsville in 1850 as a blacksmith, in 1860 as owning a bell factory,
and in 1870 and 1880 as being a bell maker.
Aside
from being a blacksmith, Isaac was also a
wagonsmith, businessman and civic leader.
He became the last village president of
Collinsville, serving two one-year terms from
1870-1872. (Isaac's Photo)
An
account in the "125th Anniversary Book of
Collinsville, published in 1962," states
that Isaac found great delight in the occasional
practice of obtaining a double handful of
nickels, dimes and quarters, and would toss them
into the air so that the youngsters could
scramble for them when they fell. He was
considered one of the wealthiest men of the
community until his investments took a slide and
he was forced to take a clerking job in a local
store to earn a living.
Isaac
resided at 214 East Church Street, and died in Madison
County, Illinois. He was buried 21 May 1895 in
Section E, Lot 91, Grave 1 of the Glenwood Cemetery.

| THOMAS ANDERSON
MOORE - son of James U.
Moore and Rebecca Cook, was born 31 October 1838
in Scio, Harrison County, Ohio and removed with
his family to Madison County, Illinois in 1847
where his Uncle Joe Moore was making cow bells in
Collinsville. He was listed in his father's
household in the 1850 Madison Co., Illinois
census. By 1860 Thomas was living in St.
Louis providing support for his mother and
brother Joseph working as an ice dealer.
When the call came for volunteers in St. Louis,
Thomas joined up. He appears to have served
the short three month period and enlisted again
with the 33rd Missouri Volunteers. Just
before leaving with his company, he married the
young Clarissa Van Bergen Pilcher on her 17th
birthday - this on the 7th day of October. -
Clarissa was the daughter of Ezekiel Pilcher and
his wife Louisa Ballard who had married in
Springfield, Illinois where Clarissa was born.
During the months
Thomas was in the war, he and Clarissa exchanged
many letters - all of which were found have been
donated to the Missouri Historical Society in the
Thomas Anderson Moore Collection. - During
the Battle of Helena, Arkansas which occurred on the 4th
of July in 1863, Thomas was nearly killed with a
gun shot wound to his right temple, and was in
fact pronounced mortal; but after many months of
recovering at a Memphis hospital, he was
discharged in December and went home to his wife
in St. Louis where they lived the remainder of
their lives. (Photo of Thomas A. Moore)
Letters
of Thomas had indicated that they had moved out
to the county and in 1870 they were located in the
census of St. Louis Township, the portion of St.
Louis not within the city limits. Their household
included their two year old son, Thomas and a
twelve year old boy, John Schneider. Not listed
were their first two babies who had died in
infancy, Emily Ellen and Minnie.
It
seems likely that Thomas learned the carpentry
trade after his return from the Civil War from
her brothers and father having been carpenters
for many years. Her father Ezekiel Pilcher
(1800-1858) was a carpenter in Springfield,
Illinois and was said to have made some of Abe
Lincoln's furniture, the Pilchers and Lincolns
having been acqauinted through mutual friends it
seems. In 1880, as in the previous
census, Thomas is listed as a house carpenter and
at this time, his mother Rebecca is also residing
with them.
When
their household was full of small children, and
apparently while Clarissa was pregnant, she
attended Medical College and graduated in 1886.
She became a homeopathic doctor, a trade that she
must have worked for some time as there exists
today, her doctor's shingle which is carved into
wood "Dr. Mrs. C.V. Moore" but Clarissa
passed away after complications from a surgery
and died on the 7th of April in 1890 when her
youngest child, Beulah, had just turned three. (Photo of Clarissa (Pilcher) Moore)
Thomas
died on 16 June 1915 in St. Louis, Missouri and
was buried in Bellfountaine Cemetery. His
dear Clarissa preceded him in death, dying after
an operation, on the 7th day of April 1890.
Thomas never remarried and stated in his pension
papers that "he never would again," for
Clarissa was his one and only love.

| CINTHIA
"AMANDA" MOORE - daughter of James U.
Moore & Deborah (Updegraph), was born 03 Mar
1845 in Harrison County, Ohio. She moved with her
family to Collinsville, Illinois where her father
went to work with his brother as a bell
manufacturer - there she was enumerated in the 1850 census as aged four.
Sometime at the onset of the war, her parents
were separated or divorced. Her mother being a
Union supporter, refused to live with a man who
defended the South. Though he ended up in Texas
and was remarried, it is not known where he or
Amanda were during 1860. It is possible that she
was working out, but living in St. Louis near her
mother, but she has not been located in the 1860
census. By 1870 she was living with her
mother and was listed as age 22, and in about
1874 she married Henry Henze. They were indexed
in the 1880 census for St. Louis,
Missouri as Heuze, and at this time
Amanda's mother and brother Joseph were residing
with them. In 1900 Amanda and Henry were
enumerated with their five sons and were residing
at Cora Avenue. On 27 June 1909, Amanda died, and
Henry is listed in the 1910 census as a widower - two
of his sons, Charles and Harry, are listed in his
household. According to his death certificate,
Henry was the son of Henry Henze and Elizabeth
(Schueler). He died in St. Louis on 23 Feb 1926,
and was buried next to his wife Amanda at Bellefontaine Cemetery.
Note: It
should be pointed out that the 1900 census taker
appears to inaccurately calculated the year of
birth by the ages, not taking into account the
month of year born - as the ages all appear to be
off. Amanda's age fluctuates considerably in the
census records, but the 1850 showing her as age
four, and most correctly matches the handwritten letter of her father
listing his children and dates of birth. So
although her headstone indicates she was born in
1851, I believer her true date of birth to be 03
Mar 1845 as indicated by her father's letter*
dated 01 Mar 1867 (*Donated to the Missouri
Historical Society in 1996 by P. Davidson-Peters
and included in the Thomas Anderson Moore
Collection).

| JOHN ASHLEY MOORE - son of
James U. Moore and his second wife, S.A., was
born on 15 Feb 1864 in Paris, Lamar Co., Texas.
On 13 December 1885, John married a neighboring
farm girl, Mary Jane, of the same surname,
however unrelated to the family. Mary Jane Moore
was the daughter of William Newton Moore and
"Lou Cindy" Brown. Lou Cindy's father, James
Brown, was enumerated on the 1835 Census for the
Cherokee Indian Nation in Tennessee and were
among those forced to leave when gold was
discovered on their lands in 1829 and the
government decided all these lands belonged to
the state. At the time Jim and Jane Brown, were
living in Tennessee, they owned twenty-eight
slaves, but because of necessity they left them
behind.
Family notes state
J.U. Moore had gone to Brewer's Plantation on
Moon Lake in Mississippi and was tutoring
children there during the war. At some time
between 1860 and 1864 he had been in Tennessee,
and it is believed that this is where he met and
married his second wife S.A.C.
John Ashley Moore
died on 24 Feb 1904 and was laid to rest at Pyles
Cemetery in Direct, Lamar Co., Texas when his
youngest son was about nine years old. After his
death, his wife Mary Jane and her five boys moved
to Oklahoma, where, in order to support herself
and her five boys, they cleared and farmed land
for other people.
It is believed
that the descendants of this family lived in
Bryan County, Oklahoma and later in Yell County,
Arkansas.
