Compiled by P. Davidson-Peters © 1995

A Note from Patti: This information has been compiled from my many years of researching family notes, letters, news clippings, census, birth, marriage, death, pension records, and correspondence with others who have contacted me over the years. Many thanks to all who have contributed - your research and photos are valued by all.

Since it is my intention to make available as much information as possible, I have included the lines of the siblings and spouses. In my opinion genealogy is not simply about our ancestors, but their associations and friendships. I have taken the liberty in some cases of including information on other branches and may have additional information not posted online. If you have records that can prove helpful or find errors, please feel free to contact me with documentation so I can make those changes.

Although many now have access to many more on-line records, the extractions to my census records include corrections to the enumerator's errors and also the maiden name of the women when known. Since I began blogging, there is also more information available at my PDP's Roots & Branches and Early St. Louis blogs.

I always enjoy your comments and emails, so please feel free to contact me. Thank You - Patricia Davidson-Peters

Family notes state that sometime during the latter part of 1700, four stalwart Scotch-Irish emigrated to America landing in Philadelphia from north of Ireland.  Their names were believed to be Eli, Jessie (who settled in Allegheny City and was a bell and carriage manufacturer), Thomas, and James - the two latter of which were said to have gone south and were slave holders.

Eli Moore, who was born about 1783, settled finally in what was then known as Beaver Dam, Pennsylvania and married there a Deborah Updegraph or Updegraff who had been born about 1787.  Not much has been learned about them except that Eli died 5 Sep 1828 in Beaver Dam, PA the same year their son Eli was born; and that about four years after the death of her husband, Deborah and other family members appear in Ohio where Deborah married William Griffith on the 22nd of May 1832 in Harrison County and were listed in the 1850 Tuscarawas County, OH census living in Mill Township.

William Griffith was born in PA in about 1772 and on 01 March 1852, made his last will and testament which was filed for probate on 3 April 1852 - final disposition of the estate filed in Tuscarawas Co. Probate Court on 24 May 1854 by Eli Moore (step-son).

Generation II

JOSEPH MOORE - the son of Eli and Deborah, was at one time considered the black sheep of the family because he played the fiddle and danced at parties.  He married "a dancing girl", Jane S. Grubs, who it is believed was born in Tennessee in about 1814. - Because the family who have nothing to do with them, they left Ohio and by 1843 were living on a farm four miles northeast of Collinsville (Madison Co., IL) on the National Trail.  Like his father, Joseph was a blacksmith and built a shop.  After a year he moved to Collinsville and took charge of the blacksmithing department of the extensive portable saw mills owned by Clark and Bickford.

By 1847, Joseph (who was now a converted Methodist) leased the shops from his former employers and sent for his brother James who arrived this year, after which the two began to manufacture cow bells and was by 1870 conceded to be the largest of its kind in the United States.

Joseph's family was enumerated in the 1850 Madison County, IL census which listed his wife and children Isaac C., Mary Ann, and Sarah.  There was living with them at this time a  blacksmith named Charles Treadway of Massachusetts. - Joseph Moore died on 17 July 1852.

CHILDREN OF
JOSEPH MOORE & JANE S. (GRUBS)
  1. Isaac Cook Moore - born 1833 in Pennsylvania.  He married Julia Caroline Slayback and became a prominent citizen of Collinsville where he took over his father and uncle's business of making cow bells.
  2. Mary Ann Moore - born 1836 in Pennsylvania.
  3. Sarah E. Moore - born 1842 in Pennsylvania.

JAMES UPDEGRAFF MOORE - was born 13 Sep 1816 in Beaver Dam, Pennsylvania and was the son of Eli Moore & Deborah Updegraff.  He removed to Ohio where at least his mother's family was supposed to have lived; and married Rebecca Cook on 07 Sep 1836 in Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio. Rebecca had been born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio and was the daughter of Martin Cook and his wife Elizabeth.  Her mother's surname is speculated to have been Firebaugh and she apparently died when Rebecca and her sister Catherine (who married James Arbaugh) were quite young.

James and Rebecca lived in the Scio and Uhrichsville area until 1847 when James went to Collinsville, Illinois to work with his brother Joseph who was a blacksmith and were enumerated in the 1850 Madison Co., IL census.  By 1860 it appears that James and Rebecca had parted company and were listed separately in the 1860 St. Louis, MO census although James may have been listed as a blacksmith residing at the rear of 411 near Main Street (but had already left the area). Rebecca was listed in the 1860 household of policeman Gabriel Darlington with her sons Thomas and Joseph.

It is believed that sometime prior to the onset of the Civil War, James may have gone south. One family note indicates he was a tutor at Brewer's Plantation located on Moon Lake in Mississippi, but by 1864 he was in Texas and married to "S.A." and father of another son, John Ashley.  He was listed in the 1870 and the 1880 Lamar County, TX census with his wife S.A., (also of Irish heritage) his son John, and an adopted daughter Ada Cherry.  He lived the remainder of his life in Lamar Co. Texas where he worked as a blacksmith, farmer, and a school teacher as he had done in Ohio and possibly in Illinois.  He died sometime in April of 1887 in a place once known as Cothranville, in Lamar Co., Texas and was said to have been buried in the village church yard.

His first wife Rebecca (Cook) remained in St. Louis and never remarried. She was listed in the 1870 census with her three youngest children: Isaac, Amanda & Joseph. Her son Thomas had married in 1862 shortly before enlisting with the 33rd MO Volunteers and he, his wife Clarissa and their two year old son Thomas, were living outside the city limits.

In 1880 Rebecca was listed in her son Thomas' household and in 1881 was listed as a widow in the St. Louis City Directory residing at 814 Mound Street (also the address of her son Joseph). Rebecca died on 18 Nov 1891 and was at that time residing at 811 Mound Street. She was laid to rest at Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Moore died @ 3:30 p.m. at 811 Mounds Street on March 12th, 1886 and was buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery on Wednesday, the 17th in Grave 811, Lot No. 24. (Confirmed by death notice)
CHILDREN OF
JAMES UPDEGRAPH MOORE & S.A.
  1. John Ashley Moore - born 15 Feb 1864 in Paris, Lamar Co., Texas. His father's letter state he married a neighboring girl also by the name of Moore. She was Mary Jane Moore (1866-1939), daughter of William Newton Moore & Loucinda (Brown).
  2. Ada M. Cherry - born about 1872  in Texas - Adopted Daughter.  Census states her parents were born in Texas.

ISAAC MOORE - was born in Pennsylvania in about 1813 but removed to Ohio with his family and once owned a home in Canal Dover. He married Elizabeth Cook who was the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Firebaugh) on 03 Jul 1834 in Harrison Co., Ohio. Her sister Susan married Isaac's brother Thomas.

A search for Isaac in the records seems to indicate that he died before 1850. Elizabeth, if she is the correct person followed through the census records, is living in North Twp., Harrison Co., OH in 1850 and age 34, head of household with Clemson, Catherine, Mary E., and William H. Moore. In 1860 Elizabeth and the children are living in Goshen Twp., Tuscarawas Co., Ohio and in 1870 in New Philadelphia Township.

There is an Elizabeth in 1880 residing in the Village of Dover and listed as the grandmother of William, and she is listed as age 65 with both parents listd with births in Pennsylvania. This information is consistent with Elizabeth, but is not confirmed.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated! Email Patti.

THOMAS J. MOORE - born about 1819 in Harrison Co., Ohio. He married Susan Cook on 06 Jun 1840 in Harrison Co., OH. Susan was the sister of Elizabeth who married Tom's brother Isaac. Although the children and this family are not confirmed with other documentation to be the same family, the census records match closely with their ages and the first child listed with them is born one year after the date of marriage.

In 1850 and 1860 the family of Thomas and Susan are residing in Goshen Twp., Tuscarawas Co., OH and not located in the census records hereafter.

Any information on this family to confirm whether this is the correct Thomas and Susan family would be appreciated! Email Patti.
