Main of North Stonington, CT
Compiled by P. Davidson-Peters (2004)

The Main family in connection with the Peters family of Monroe County, Michigan, appears to have descended from Ezekiel Maine. The earliest records to date, state that he was living in the Plymouth Colony at Scituate in 1661 and was a possible son of John Maine. - These records dated 9 March 1660/1661 state that "Ezkiel Mayn" was fined twenty shillings for aiding Robert Whitcomb and Mary Cudworth in their elopement or "coming together without consent of parents and lawful marriage."

Another record then appears in the Plymouth Colony records ordering on the 20th of October 1668 by the Council of War, that although willing to train and bear arms for the Milita Company of Scituate, Ezekiel was discharged in regard that he "hath one eye" and that it was considered dangerous for him to be in arms.

Within four months, Ezekiel had left Massachusetts and is enumerated in a census of Stonington, Connecticut as being one among forty-three heads of families, some of whom had come to the area from Scituate. - In 1672, Ezekiel received a grant of land here, purchased another, and received a second grant in 1680 - all of which adjoined and were located in what is now North Stonington. This land was bounded by the Shunnock River on the south, and by the land of Joshua Holmes on the north.

Ezekiel lived in North Stonington the remainder of his life. He was a farmer, had been admitted to the Church of Stonington on 3 September 1676, was Deputy to the General Court at Hartford, CT in 1690, and died at Stonington on the 19th of June 1714. His will was dated 5 May 1711 was administered to probate on 13 July 1714. This Will in part, states: "... to Mary, my dearly beloved wife, the one third part of all my moveable estate ... to my two daughters, hannah Main and ffebe Kingsbury, one third of moveable estate to be equally divided between them. Sons Ezekiell Main and Jeremiah the other 1/3 of moveables. Executors Ezekiell and Jeremiah."
