LEWMAN
The Lewman family of Clark County, Indiana was one of the most prominent families during the mid 1800's and came to the area from North Carolina. The first identified to come to Clark County, Indiana, was Moses Lewman, believed to be the son of Aaron Lewman. He was born in 1762 and died in 1820, and was laid to rest in the Union Cemetery in Utica Township, Clark County, Indiana.

Prior to their arrival in Indiana, Moses married Elizabeth Cash, the daughter of John Cash and Rachel (Dawson) in about 1798. Elizabeth was born in 1769 in Maryland and had seven children by Moses, all of which were born in North Carolina.

After the death of her husband, Elizabeth probably lived with one of her children as she is listed in her son John's household in 1850, residing in Charlestown. Elizabeth died five years later in 1855 and was also buried in Union Cemetery.

SECOND GENERATION

CECELIA LEWMAN (Moses, John) was born about 1797 in Maryland. Family records indicate she married William Green in North Carolina and had two sons, John and Isaiah Green by him. Speculating upon her date and place of birth, it is possible she may have married (2) Matthew M. Calirborn where they may be enumerated in the 1850 Jeffersonville, Clark Co., Indiana census with a daughter, C.A., age twelve. Cecelia, then seems to appear in the 1870 Memphis, Union Twp., Clark Co., Indiana census where she is again listed as Cecelia Green - possible, considering she appears to be widowed again.

JOHN B. LEWMAN (Moses, John) was born on 02 Oct 1802 in North Carolina. He married (1) Mary Grisamore, the daughter of Jacob Grisamore and Sarah (Treichler). Mary was born on 01 Jul 1808 in Berks Co., Pennsylvania, died on 01 Jul 1848 in Clark County, Indiana and was buried in Union Cemetery.

John was enumerated in the 1850 Charlestown, Clark Co., Indiana census, and was residing in Utica Township during the 1860-1880 census. In 1870, he appears to be listed with a second wife Catherine who was age 55 born in Kentucky, along with son John W. age 22; and a possible stepson James Aiken, who was age 17.

The 1880 census verifies Catherine as his wife, and a check on marriage records for Clark county, show a John Lewman married to Catherine Howard on 09 January 1866. John died on 10 Nov 1884 in Clark Co., Indiana and was buried beside his first wife in Union Cemetery.
