Armando Laratta (Photo taken Hannibal, MO)
Armando Laratta
Son of Marziale Laratta & Teresa Prato

Photo & birth info contributed by Adele, Salvatore and our family of Crotone (2007)

Armando was born 20 Mar 1888 in Papanice, in the province of Crotone within the region of Calabria - always explained to the family, as in "the heel of the boot." He was orphaned at a young age and raised, it is said, by his older sister Antonia.

According to "Manifest of Alien Passengers for the U.S. Immigration Officer at Port of Arrival, Armando was listed as age seventeen when he departed from the port of Napoli on the S.S. Citta Di Torino on 24 Mar 1905. He was listed as unable to read or write and in the possession of ten dollars at the time he arrived at the port of New York on the 11th of April. He would make at least three trips back and forth, at one time having to stay and serve in the Italian calvary.

In about 1914, while in Italy, he married Eleanora Rossomanno, the daughter of Pietro and Mariangela Crisera' and sister of Caterina who would also make her home in St. Louis. Armando, his wife, and their son Pataleone Marziale, settled in St. Louis where their first American born child, Anthony, was born at the end of 1921. There Armando worked as a barber, but after serving in the war, was never well. Their hard times and lack of good nourishment brought on poor health and Armando died at the age of forty-eight, leaving a grieving wife and eight children. He was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
