HUCKLEBERRY
John Huckleberry, was said to have been the son of George and Rosanna (Wise), Huckleberry. According to the biographical sketches, George Huckleberry, Sr. was a native of Wurtemburg, Germany who had come to America, settling in Pennsylvania. In about 1784, he moved to Jefferson County, Kentucky near Abbott's station. There, one of his sons was captured by the Indians, and when they discovered they were being pursued, they killed the boy near Twelve-mile Island, which was the cause of the creek on the Kentucky side being called Huckleberry.

George moved to Clark County, Indiana in 1796 and settled near Charlestown Landing, where he purchased a large tract of land. He had seven sons and two daughters, those being: John who married Eliza (Murdock); Martin who was in Captain Wells' company at St. Clair's defeat; George Jr., who was one of the volunteers that went to the relief of Fort Harrison when Major Zachary Taylor, afterwards President Taylor, was besieged by the Indians; David; Abraham; Susannah; Henry, who was in the battle of Tippecanoe; Jacob; and Elizabeth Huckleberry.

JOHN HUCKLEBERRY, the son of George as mentioned, was born in Pennsylvania in 1769. He married Elizabeth "Eliza" Murdock on 21 Sep 1799 in Jefferson Co., Kentucky, and died on 27 Sep 1823 in Clark Co., Indiana. He was laid to rest at Baird Cemetery, and a humble stone marks his place of rest.

Note: Uncertain if Murdock is Eliza's maiden name or married name.

GEORGE HUCKLEBERRY, the son of Rosanna (Wise) and George Huckleberry, Sr. who was a native of Germany, was born 25 Dec 1776. The father first settled in Pennsylvania where the family remained until 1784 at which time they moved to Jefferson Co., Kentucky near Abbott's station.

The family moved to Clark Co., Indiana in about 1796 and in May of 1809 George married Ann Carr, the daughter of John Carr and Margaret (Ewing). It should be noted that after the death of Margaret's husband John in 1784, Margaret's father went to Pennsylvania and brought her and her children back to his home in Virginia. There Margaret married her cousin, Robert Ewing on 03 Mar 1790. Margaret died on 18 Jun 1815 in Winchester, Virginia and is believed to be buried in the Ewing Cemetery.

It is believed that the Ann Carr came out to Indiana with an uncle after the death of her father. She and George were married forty-seven years at the time of his death which occurred in Clark county on 19 Jun 1856. Ann died a few months later in on the 27th of September. They are both laid to rest in Baird Cemetery.

  1. John Carr Huckleberry - born 1810; he married Susan Malott on 24 Jun 1829 in Clark Co., Indiana, she having been born about 1811. John became a member of the Legislature several terms, and was proprietor and editor of the Southern Indianian. He was postmaster from 1838 to 1841, and sheriff of Clark county from 1845 to 1847 and were enumerated in the 1860 census.
  2. Eliza Jane Huckleberry - born 1815; married George Epler, and died 1893.
  3. William P. Huckleberry - born 1819 in Indiana, was a claim agent and notary public.
 
 
GENERATION II
 
LAVINA HUCKLEBERRY, daughter of John and Eliza, was born on 15 Sep 1797 in Clark Co., IN. She married David Allen Copple on 01 Dec 1813. David was born on 25 Dec 1788 in North Carolina and was said to be the son of Jacob Peter Copple Elizabeth (Garren).

Lavina died on 15 Dec 1845 in Marion Co., Illinois, and David on 23 Oct 1866 in Centralia, Marion Co., Illinois.

EDMUND DAVID HUCKLEBERRY, son of John and Eliza, was born on 10 Feb 1799 in Kentucky. He married Mary W. Daily, daughter of Philip and Mary (Wise) on 13 Dec 1822 in Clark Co., Indiana. Mary was born on 27 Apr 1806 in Clark Co., Indiana. they were enumerated in the census records as follows: 1850 in Dist. #11, Marion Co., Illinois; and 1860 Centralia, Washington Co., Illinois.

Edmund died on 23 Jul 1867 in Jefferson Co., Illinois. Mary died on 08 Mar 1883 and was buried beside Edmund in Gilead Methodist Cemetery, Jefferson Co., Illinois.

She married Isaac Barrickman on 08 Mar 1825 in Clark Co., Indiana, he appearing to have died prior to 1850 as Christina was listed as head of household, age 48 with daughters Margaret, Ann, and Nancy Barrickman. They were listed in the census for 1850 residing in Dist. #11, Marion Co., Illinois.

Christina died on 02 Sep 1874 and was buried in the Gilead Cemetery located in Grand Prairie Township, Jefferson County, Illinois.

DAVID EDWARD HUCKLEBERRY, son of John and Eliza, was born in 1805 in Indiana. He married Ann Martin on 11 Jan 1829 in Clark Co., Indiana, she having been born in Kentucky in about 1806. They were enumerated in the census of 1850 residing in Monroe Twp., Clark County, Indiana.

David later married Sarah M. Thompson on 18 Mar 1860 in Clark Co., Indiana and were listed in the census in Monroe Twp., as having been married within the year.

ELIZABETH COPPLE, daughter of Lavina and David, was born on 04 Dec 1814 in Indiana . She married Jacob C. Breeze on 07 Nov 1833 in Marion Co., Illinois. Jacob was born on 07 Apr 1812 in Indiana. They were enumerated in the following census records: 1850 Dist. #10, Jefferson Co., Illinois; 1860 Centralia, Marion Co., Illinois; 1870 Centralia, Jefferson Co., Illinois.

Jacob died on 10 May 1883 and Elizabeth died on 09 Nov 1875 in Jefferson Co., Illinois. They were buried in Little Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Co., Illinois. Their birth dates are calculated from the age at death: 60 years, 11 months, and 5 days.

In 1860 and 1870, they were listed in the in Centralia, Marion Co., Illinois census. A year later, James died on 23 Aug 1871 in Centralia, Jefferson County, Illinois. Emily died there on 15 May 1915 and they were buried in Gilead Cemetery.

Edmund died on 31 Mar 1909 and both were buried in Gilead Cemetery, Jefferson Co., Illinois.

A note regarding Jefferson County, Illinois: there is no villiage in Grand Prairie, but Richview and Irvington are close by in Washington county. Prior to her marriage, Nancy was enumerated with her mother in the census for Dist. #11, Marion Co., Illinois in 1850. They were later enumerated in 1860 in Centralia, Marion Co., Illinois, 1870 Irvington, Jefferson Co., Illinois and 1880 in Grand Prairie Twp., Jefferson Co., Illinois.

EDMUND V. HUCKLEBERRY, son of Edmund David and Mary W. (Daily), was born on 08 Oct 1832 in Indiana. He married Isabella Coy on 12 Oct 1858 in Washington Co., Illinois, she having been born about 1842, possibly in Vermont.

Edmund was counted in a census in 1850 in Dist. #11, Marion Co., Illinois and later with his family in 1860 residing in Hoyleton, Washington Co., Illinois.

Elizabeth married Michael Slote on 26 Feb 1857 in Washington Co., Illinois, he having been born about 1833 in Pennsylvania.

Nancy was listed with her mother in 1850 residing in Dist. #11, Marion Co., IL. She was later counted in a census in 1860 in Centralia, Marion Co., IL; 1870 in Irvington, Jefferson Co., IL; and in 1880 was listed in the census records for Grand Prairie, Jefferson Co., Illinois.

Nancy married Edmund Copple, son of David Allen Copple and Lavina (Huckleberry) on 01 May 1851 in Marion Co., IL. Edmund was born on 12 Oct 1829 in Clark Co., Indiana and died on 31 Mar 1909. He was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Jefferson Co., Illinois.

MARY JANE HUCKLEBERRY, daughter of David Edward and Mary W. (Daily), was born about 1834 in Indiana. She married Peter Cortner on 24 Feb 1857 in Clark Co., Indiana, he having been born about 1831 in Indiana.

They were located in the 1860 census residing in in Monroe Twp., Clark Co., Indiana with a daughter Carrie Cortner who was born about 1859.
