Son of John Hopkins and
Sarah (Green), James was born in Sussex, England
and became an importer and breeder of fine horses
in the United States. In 1834 he joined his
family and left England, crossing the broad ocean
where the family located in Durham County, in the
Province of Ontario, Canada. While there, he
followed agricultural pursuits until 1848 when he
then came to Rock County, Wisconsin where he
married Elizabeth Adee, the daughter of Joshua
& Elizabeth (Peters).
James
and Elizabeth were the parents of three children:
John R., Mrs. Amanda E. Stevens, and Sampson
Hopkins.
