Son of
David Ayres Holly & Eva A. (Hoke), both
of Pennsylvania, was born in Dixon on 01 Jan
1843, approximately eight years after his
parents came to Franklin Grove, Lee County,
Illinois from Ohio where they had farmed and
their first two children, William D.F., and
Jesse B. Holly were born.
Between 1836 and 1840,
two more children were born to David and Eva:
Amos H., and Cornelia A. Holly. After the
birth of their fifth son, David, the father
purchased 720 acres in Palmyra Township in
Lee County, in the year 1845 - the same year
their son George was born. His birth was
followed by a daughter, Emily, in August of
1849.
David Clayton Holly
(pictured above with his wife &
children), was married in Woosung, Ogle
County, Illinois to Caroline (Bovey), on 24
December 1872, the same day her sister
married DeForest Johnson. Both were the
daughters of Daniel & Martha (Brubaker)
Bovey and DeForest was the son of Harvey
& mary Jane (Wheat).
David and Caroline's
first child Anna (Annie) was born in about
1874 and married Ira Dull; son George was
born in Lee County, Illinois in 1876 and
married Grace Johnson, the daughter of
Franklin and Ida Mae (Rand); son Harry was
born about 1879; daughter Vernie was born
about 1881 and married Clifford Mills; and
youngest child Robert was born about 1883 and
married Ethel Grace Larson of Otter Tail
County, Minnesota.
The family was
enumerated in the 1880 Lee County, Illinois
census in Palmyra (Caroline Bovey was also
listed in Buffalo Twp., Ogle Co., IL in 1870
prior to her marriage to David). The family
was later listed in the Iowa State Census in
1885 living in Cherokee County, Iowa.
David Clayton Holly
passed away on 15 August 1920 in Hewitt, Todd
Co., MN. His widow, Caroline, passed nearly
twelve years later on 10 June 1932. Both were
laid to rest at the Hewitt Cemetery as was
their son George and his wife Grace (Johnson)
who both lost their lives in a tragic house
fire on 28 February 1955.
